Sketch of George & Robert Spencer, St. Charles County, Missouri >From "A History of the Pioneer Families of Missouri, with numerous sketches, anecdotes, adventures, etc., relating to Early Days in Missouri" by William S. Bryan and Robert Rose, Published by Bryan, Brand & Co., St. Louis Missouri, 1876. ********************************************************************** George Spencer married Sally McConnell, of St. Charles County, on April 14, 1807. Their marriage certificate was the first that was issued in St. Charles district under the American government. The ceremony was performed by Ebenezer Ayres, a Justice of the Peace. They settled on the Salt River road, about three miles above St. Charles, and raised sixteen children. Robert Spencer, brother of George, was the first Judge of the Court of Common Pleas for the District of St. Charles, receiving his appointment in December, 1804. He lived on the point below St. Charles, and in 1822 built the first brick house in that locality. During the overflow of 1824, the water came up into the second story, and not long after, the house was set on fire by lightning, and destroyed. Mrs. Spen- cer was a very energetic woman. She milked thirty cows, and made large quantities of butter and chesse for market. Wild cats and catamounts were abunddant in that region, and her cows would some- times come home with holes eaten in their shoulders by these animals. The names of Mr. Spencer's children were: Robert Jr., Harriet, Will- iam, Joseph, Rebecca, John, Sally and Maria. The girls were all well educated, and taught school. Maria was the only one that marr- ied. ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
