Source: St. Clair County Republican, Osceola, Missouri Date: Thursday, 26 August 1897 Submitter: Cheryl K. Bell Rainey Dew Drops Roads dry and dusty. Stock water very scarce with a prospect of becoming more so. Miss Eva Price returned to her home in Humansville last Saturday. Major Sanford Tramel took in the Kidd trial at Roscoe last Saturday. That old Irish veteran, James Elliott, was attending the Monegaw reunion and remained until Friday. Our Tom Cooley's afflicted hand has so far recovered as to be released from the sling and he says that the natural feeling is being restored. The average health of our people is first class and with the exception of a case or two of Klondike fever we might add that all our citizens are healthy. The song of "Korn Kutter" is now to be heard. The dry weather caused the corn to prematurely ripen and there will be plenty of roughness for feed during the coming winter. The personal effects of the late Peter Francis wa sold at public vendue on last Saturday. The proceeds of the sale will be divided among the heirs as there were no debts to pay. Our people have been all excitement over the trial of the Kidds for the shooting of Albert Neibarger and now that the accused are safely behind the bars the fever of excitement is slowly receding. The home of W. J. Horn has been thoroughly renovated and repaired with new paint, plastering and furniture and now he says that life is worth living with everything seemingly new and cozy. The fall apples and peaches are fast being converted into dried fruit for use in winter while the choice ones are being made into butters and preserves for "spreads" during the bleak days of ice and snow. E. W. Tracey, the veteran sorghum grinder and boiler, is at present engaged in that lucrative business and presses out barrels of juice daily and consumes several watermelons while the juice boils. Those of our people who attended the reunion at Monegaw Springs report a large crowd in attendance and only one thing was lacking, and that was someone to relate the great events in the life of Chief Monegaw. For size, quality and fine flavored watermelons, Joseph and William Wagoner's crop has no superior in this southwestern country and as a consequence their melons find ready sale in the markets of Osceola, Monegaw Springs and all surrounding towns. OSAGE TOWNSHIP: Quite a number of cases of chills are reported in this neighborhood. Some corn is being cut this week, and in a few days it will be in full blast. Miss Lizzie Thompson, who has been quite sick for several days, is reported better. Thos. W. Mallory of Lowry was in these parts a few days ago looking after his farm and taking in the reunion. Mr. and Mrs. James Puffenbarger have for several days been entertaining Mrs. P.'s parents, who reside at Deepwater. Stock water is becoming very scarce and many farmers are compelled to drive their stock more distance for water. Mrs. Moore of Pittsburgh, Kan., who has been at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L. A. Morris, died on last Friday of consumption, and was buried the following day at Mt. Zion cemetery. George Lasater of Kaneyville, Kansas, has been visiting his mother and other relatives during the past week. He left for home Monday, accompanied by Miss Susie Casey, who will probably spend the winter in Kansas. Do not make your children to become decrepid in after yars by giving them chill tonics containing arsenic. Arsenic ruins their bone and puffs them up. They look better - for a while. The arsenic finally shows its ghastly results. Dr. Bell's Peppermint Chill Tonic contains no arsonic. It makes stout, sound bone. It makes real flesh - health itself. It cures chills permanently.
