Daisy Gordon (Bett) Ballweg - Daisy Gordon (Bett) Ballweg, 79, died March 31, 2004, after a valiant challenge to overcome lung cancer. Born in St. Andrews, Scotland, she grew up on a farm raising Clydesdale horses. As a child, Daisy played tennis and golf, but her favorite was tennis. WWII brought her future husband, John P. Ballweg, to Lukers AFB, near St. Andrews. They met around Thanksgiving in 1944, and were marred on August 16, 1945. John traveled home to the United States in late 1945, and Daisy joined him in Texas in July 1946. John remained in the military until 1954. John and Daisy came to the Kansas City area in 1954, to manage and show champion Quarter Horses for the RS Bar Ranch, owned by the late Robert Q. Sutherland. Working as true partners, they criss-crossed America with an outstanding string of show horses. Leaving the RS Bar Ranch in 1966, they opened and operated a successful horse training operation in Stilwell, Kansas, that served clients from all across the country and the world. Daisy became a citizen of the United States in 1958. In the early 1970's, Daisy found time to return to the tennis courts. Ranked nationally and internationally by the USTA, she played champion singles and doubles competitively through 2003. A member of the Indian Creek Racquet Club since its opening, Daisy was a highly respected non-pro player who played to win. Recently, she enjoyed the Stilwell Magnolias and Purple Strutters, local chapters of the Red Hat Society. She is survived by her husband of over 58 years, John; and a sister, Sybil Simpson and her family from Edinburgh, Scotland. Michael Francis Berry - 6/19/52-3/15/04 Michael Francis Berry peacefully stepped over into his heavenly home March 15, 2004, age 51. He endured a year's battle with cancer. Michael had worked for the Rio Grande Railroad for 18 years when living in Colorado and Utah. Michael moved to Olathe, KS, in 1998. He met his wife in 1999, and was married December 2001 at College Church of the Nazarene, where he attended regularly, sang in the choir and was active in the church. Michael had a zest for life, a twinkle in his eyes and lots of love and joy in his heart. He loved the Lord and yearned to understand more of His word. She was active in Rainbow Girls and later the Eastern Star. Dolores wed Thomas J. Clark on May 21, 1955. She and Tom located in Kansas City in 1957 and enjoyed many years of friendship through Tom's career with TWA. She was the loving mother of Thomas, Diane, Grace and Gerald. Tom and Dolores moved the family to a farm in Leavenworth in 1973. Dolores served her community as president of the Leavenworth Christian Women's Club, as a Sunday School teacher and in her later years was active in the Leavenworth Garden Club. She was a volunteer for many school activities and social events in the lives of her children. She was known for her big voice cheering at her children's sporting events, and often overwhelmed the entire cheerleading squad. She was a diehard Jayhawks basketball fan. Dolores took great pride in being a grandmother. She will always be remembered for the creative activities and crafts she did with her grandchildren: Kristopher, Katie, Sean, Hannah and Garrett. Dolores was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Eugene Roush. She is survived by her husband of over 48 years, Thomas J. Clark; a son, Thomas J. Clark, Olathe, his wife, Wyndee and their children, Kris and Katie; a daughter, Diane E. George was born December 13, 1918, in Denver, CO, and spent his youthful years enjoying the mountains, jumping freight cars and dodging railroad security personnel. He served as a Naval radar man in WWII, participating in the invasion of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He ended his career as a 2nd class Petty Officer after serving in the Korean Conflict. Mr. Craig then went to work for Davis Paint Company before moving on to Cook Paint and Varnish Company, where he was employed for 33 years. Mr. Craig managed and coached numerous little league and semi-pro baseball teams, including Naval Reserve Teams, for 15 years, as well as organizing weekend square dances for Northland youth in the early 1950s. He is a member of the VFW Post 5606, past commander of American Legion Post 61 Jarchow Schroeder, and for 18 years served as President of Painters and Allied Trade Local Union 754. He was also a member of the Heart of America Boat Club and the Rotary Club of North Kansas City. George's proudest achievement came after retirement in 1984, when he founded, organized and became president of the Kansas City Northern Miniature Railroad Club. This NonProfit organization, fueled by the sweat and dedication of its many volunteer members, salvaged and relocated the abandoned Swope Park Kiddy train to a new home in Line Creek Park. The restored train will continue to serve as his legacy while bringing joy and happiness to Northland children for many, many years to come. Mr. Craig will be deeply missed by three loving children: Daughter, Adele Lewis, Denver, CO, and sons, Chauncey S. Craig, Charles Town, WV, and George W. Craig, Jr., of Kearney, MO. She received her Associates degree from the KCK Community College and her Bachelor's degree through the PACE program. Classie was truly the matriarch of her family and will be sadly missed by all whose lives she touched. After moving to Kansas City and joining the First Baptist Church of Quindaro, she was taken under the wings of Aunt Louis Moore and Rev. Stacy E. Hopkins, and became active in the Usher Board, Youth Department, Mission and was Sunday School Superintendent. When she moved to Atlanta, she continued her church involvement at the White Oak Hills Baptist Church. She retired from AT&T after 34 years of employment. He later joined the Beverly Lumber Co., first in Beverly, MO, and later in Riverside, where he was the yard foreman and Teamsters Union steward until his retirement in 1992. Joe served the City of Weston as Mayor from 1955-1959, Municipal Judge, City Councilman and in later years as a member for the City Planning Commission. He was a founder of the Weston Sports Association and cofounder of the Mid-Continent Sports Association, where Joe served as president and director of umpires and as a home plate umpire for innumerable summer league baseball games for over 40 years. Joe was a member of Holy Trinity Church and the Knights of Columbus. He served many years on the Parish Council and was one of a small group of men who maintained the Church, Rectory and grounds. He was born September 9, 1913, in Wichita, KS, the only child of Floyd and Edythe Fraser. His father was a musician and inventor so during the Depression Jack worked to help his parents make ends meet. Even after he had a family, Jack continued to help them when times were hard. This set the stage for a lifetime of helping others. Jack was known to his friends for his sense of humor and skill as a carpenter. He spent most of his spare time building items for his family and church, especially after retiring from his position as fire insurance underwriter at Bruce Dodson and Company in 1978. Jack was a faithful husband for 67 years and cared for his wife, Bess Mae Reece Fraser, throughout her final illness until just a few months before her death on January 28, 2003. Jack and Bess lived most of their lives in Overland Park, KS, but moved to Oakwood, GA, in 1996 in order to be close to their oldest daughter and her family. Jack is survived by three daughters, Judy Miller, Gainesville, GA, Jan Cowan, Mt. Shasta, CA, and Jane Peck (Mrs. Eugene) of Kansas City, MO; six grandchildren; and eight greatgrandchildren. After returning to the states, she worked in a variety of fields from office management to art galleries, and was part owner in a few businesses. Bev lived in Florida for many years and there met and married Gary (Marty) Harris on April 16, 1983, in Marathon, FL. They had three children, Lauren (20), Lina (18), and Kyle (15), who all still reside in Tallahassee. Bev and Marty later divorced. Bev returned to Kansas in 2002, near the onset of her illness. Bev always saw the world in her own special way and shared that with all she encountered. She loved life and maintained her sense of humor throughout her illness. She enjoyed cooking for and entertaining her family and friends even after becoming legally blind. When he retired from Farmland, he bought overthe-road trucks which he owned and operated for several years. He was a former deacon of the Ingalls Federated Church and he was a veteran of the United States Merchant Marine serving during WWII. He was born May 14, 1922, near Jamesport, MO, the son of Guy Leslie and Etta May (Martin) Lasher. Mr. Lasher graduated from Raytown High School in 1940. Mr. Lasher served in the United States Army from July 1940 to July 4, 1945. He was in the 17th Infantry Division during World War II, serving three years in the Aleutian Islands. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and received the Bronze Star. Mr. Lasher was a mail carrier in Kansas City for 15 years. He then went into Law Enforcement serving on the Raytown Police Dept. before accepting the position of Chief of Police in Marshall, MO, in 1965. From 1967-1975, he worked for a Commercial Dry Cleaning Equipment Co. as an area Sales and Service Manager. He returned to Missouri in 1975, and worked in Security for Farmland Industries before retiring in 1984. Mr. Lasher was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Glenn Lasher. On June 4, 1944, in Kansas City, MO, he married the former Lucille Lenetta Brown, she survives of the home. In her early adult life, she lived in Butler and then moved to Raytown in 1955. She is survived by two children, Kenneth Alvin Nordyke of Raytown, and Ann and Jim Salisbury of Lee's Summit. She enjoyed family history and meeting those who met last summer in Ohio, Illinois and Maryland, where her ancestors came from. She had plans to go to Iowa and Tennessee this summer. She raised her children on her own since 1966, and spent a great deal of family time all of her life. She was a Sunday School Teacher, U.M.W. and Camp Fire Girls Leader. She was a Seventh Day Adventist and a charter member of Southland Seventh Day Adventist Church and a former founding member of the Countryside United Methodist Church of Kansas City. She often talked about the joy of going to Presbyterian Camp as a child. Helen began as a switchboard operator at Butler, MO, in the late '40's. She was a Registered Cosmetologist in Missouri and Kansas. She was Instructor at House of Heavilin School of Cosmetology for years 1967-1990, worked the 1990 Census and currently was employed at Gasket Engineering for the last 10 years. Helen graduated from Amoret High School in 1947. She played on the school Basketball Team. She was raised a farm girl and working the farm was daily chores and working by doing all things the right way was a way of life. She was a 4-H member as a child, enjoying cattle raising, sewing and cooking projects. Mr. Patterson, a former Vendo Company official and realtor, was a lifelong resident of Kansas City, MO. He was born January 19, 1918, to John Eri Patterson and Mildred Wagner Patterson. He graduated from the University of Missouri at Columbia, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi and Phi Beta Kappa. He also graduated from the Harvard Business School. He entered the US Navy in 1941. He was on the destroyer U.S.S. Charles Ausborne, and took part in the action at Okinawa and the retaking of the Philippines. Mr. Patterson received an honorary discharge from active service in 1945 as a Lieutenant Commander. In 1950, he married Marilyn Cecilia Pierson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Pierson. He was one of the founders of Farm Belt Fertilizer and Chemical Company, and later became its president. In 1964, he joined the Vendo Company as vice-president and remained a director of the company until 1988. Governor James Blair appointed him to the University of Missouri Board of Curators and he was reappointed for a second term by Governor Warren E. Hearnes. He was a member of the Friends of the Library of the University of Missouri at Columbia, and served a term as president. He received the university's Faculty-Alumni Award in 1992. A loyal and enthusiastic alumnus, it was a point of pride with him that for 50 years he didn't miss an MU-KU football game. He was for many years a trustee of the Missouri State Historical Society. A director of Research Hospital for 27 years, he was also a board member of the Lyric Opera Company, and served as both its president and chairman of the board. He was a director of the Unitog Company and served 25 years on the Board of the United Funds. Mr. Patterson was a member of the Rotary Club, the University Club, and the Kansas City Country Club. He is survived by his wife of 54 years; his daughter Mildred Grossman and her husband Marc, Arlington, VA; and in Kansas City, his daughter Ellen Aisenbrey and her husband John; his daughter Margot Patterson; his sister Elaine French; and four granddaughters. Karen Lynn Weidinger - Karen Lynn Weidinger, our beloved daughter and sister, lost her battle with cancer on March 29, 2004. She was surrounded by her family at the time of her death. She was born in Kansas City, MO, to her parents, Howard and Judy Weidinger, on March 5, 1966. She was raised and lived in St. Charles, MO. She attended St. Charles Borromeo Elementary, St. Phillipine Duchesne High School, and was a graduate of Northeast Missouri University. She just celebrated her 38th birthday. Karen worked as a mortgage specialist with Chase Manhattan Mortgage Corporation. She dedicated her life to her local community, friends and family. She was an active member of Women's Council of Realtors, St. Charles Board of Realtors, Con Trios Club and was a lifetime member of the St. Peters Jaycees for the last 15 years. She will be deeply missed by her parents; her sisters, Debbie (Rick) Povis and Kathy (Roger) Thompson, her nieces, Angie and Jackie Weidinger and Danielle Thompson, her nephews, Nicholas Shuck and Ryan Thompson, all of St. Charles, and her many friends. Mary Ruth (Dorsey) Zackula - Mary Ruth (Dorsey) Zackula died on March 31, 2004. Ruth was born October 4, 1924, to Claude P. and Mary Alice Dorsey in Cameron, MO. She graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in Education. She married Wallace (Roy) Zackula in 1949, and they lived in Independence, MO, for 53 years until his death in 2003. After Roy's death, Ruth moved to Bishop Spencer Place, where she made many new friends. Ruth taught in the Kansas City, Missouri School District for many years. She attended Trinity Episcopal Church in Independence, MO, and was an active member of PEO Chapter IK. Her warmth, kindness and generous spirit made her a very special person to all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her sister, Florence Wolf and her brothers, Claude and Gray Dorsey. She is survived by her brother, Dennis Dorsey; her daughters, Carol Clippard, Jan Morris, Denise Baldwin and Kim DeCoster;10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
