Harry W. Adams - Harry W. Adams, 84, Kansas City, MO, passed away April 1, 2004, at St. Luke's Hospital. He was born in Topeka, KS, on September 5, 1919. He was a graduate of the University of Kansas and spent his entire career at Westinghouse in the engineering division, retiring in 1984. He served his country as a Captain in the United States Army during WWII. Harry's family will mostly miss his quick witted and dry sense of humor, his great love of animals, especially of the feline persuasion, and his concern for social causes. He was a quiet, gentle, and tolerant man, who loved and appreciated his family. In Harry's spare time, he enjoyed building and assembling models, carpentry, listening to music, and was an avid reader of psychology, history, science, and economics. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marge Adams, son Chuck Adams, and grandson Mark Adams. He is survived by his second wife, Doris Johnson Adams and her children, of Savoy, IL; daughters Susan Young and her husband Douglas, of Prairie Village, KS, and Sara Stafford and her husband Jerry, of Kansas City, MO; eight grandchildren; and six greatgrandchildren. Born in St. Andrews, Scotland, she grew up on a farm raising Clydesdale horses. As a child, Daisy played tennis and golf, but her favorite was tennis. WWII brought her future husband, John P. Ballweg, to Lukers AFB, near St. Andrews. They met around Thanksgiving in 1944, and were marred on August 16, 1945. John traveled home to the United States in late 1945, and Daisy joined him in Texas in July 1946. John remained in the military until 1954. John and Daisy came to the Kansas City area in 1954, to manage and show champion Quarter Horses for the RS Bar Ranch, owned by the late Robert Q. Sutherland. Working as true partners, they criss-crossed America with an outstanding string of show horses. Leaving the RS Bar Ranch in 1966, they opened and operated a successful horse training operation in Stilwell, Kansas, that served clients from all across the country and the world. Daisy became a citizen of the United States in 1958. In the early 1970's, Daisy found time to return to the tennis courts. Ranked nationally and internationally by the USTA, she played champion singles and doubles competitively through 2003. A member of the Indian Creek Racquet Club since its opening, Daisy was a highly respected non-pro player who played to win. Recently, she enjoyed the Stilwell Magnolias and Purple Strutters, local chapters of the Red Hat Society. She is survived by her husband of over 58 years, John; and a sister, Sybil Simpson and her family from Edinburgh, Scotland. She lived here all her life until the fall of 2002 when she moved to Utah to be with her family. She attended school and college in Kansas City and was active in many civic causes. She was a member of the Children's Relief Association of Mercy Hospital, Kansas City Saint Andrew Society, and the Junior League of Kansas City where she served as treasurer, Finance Chairman, and Sustaining Chairman. She was a volunteer for the United Fund Drives and served as Assistant Treasurer for two years. She served as Treasurer of the Jewel Ball the first three years and then chaired other committees. She also served in many capacities on the then Pembroke County Day School Parent Teachers Association. She was a former member of the Friends of Art of the Nelson Gallery, where she also had served as a Docent. A former member of the Mission Hills Country Club and the River Club. Stockman in Topeka, KS, on December 3, 1950. She grew up on a farm and ranch near Maple Hill, KS, where she attended elementary and high school. She attended Marymount College in Salina, KS, graduating cum laude in 1972, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Following college, Bev worked for the American Red Cross in England and in Germany. After returning to the states, she worked in a variety of fields from office management to art galleries, and was part owner in a few businesses. Bev lived in Florida for many years and there met and married Gary (Marty) Harris on April 16, 1983, in Marathon, FL. They had three children, Lauren (20), Lina (18), and Kyle (15), who all still reside in Tallahassee. Bev and Marty later divorced. Bev returned to Kansas in 2002, near the onset of her illness. Bev always saw the world in her own special way and shared that with all she encountered. She loved life and maintained her sense of humor throughout her illness. She is survived by her children as well as her parents, Bob and T. Stockman of Lyndon (formerly of Maple Hill); her siblings Barbara Schulte of Overland Park, Bruce M. He graduated from Bishop Ward High School in 1941. Bud joined the Navy and after serving his country, he went to work for the Social Administration, where he retired. Bud married Betty Evans from Fort Scott, KS, in 1947, and then raised three sons, Mic, Kevin, and John, in Kansas City, KS. Bud and Betty divorced 30 years later, and he married Beatrice (Bunny) Maxwell, and they resided in Colorado Springs, CO, until Bunny passed in 2003. In his early years, prior to contracting polio, he was a National Golden Gloves and Naval Boxing Champion. Bud was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and serviced as Grand Knight. He enjoyed bowling, archery, and being Scoutmaster of Troop 211. While residing in Colorado, Bud was a member of the Eagles and Elk Associations. Bud also had a degree in Music from The Conservatory of Music. He was a licensed broker and real estate agent, in addition to being a deputy sheriff for Wyandotte County. Mr. Kappelman was born November 29, 1922, in Ottawa, KS, the son of Otto L. and Erma Fern (Bouse) Kappelman. He attended Lawrence Public Schools and was a 1941 graduate of Liberty Memorial High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, 106th Cavalry Division and served in the European Theater during WW II from 1943-1946. He was a member of the Dorsey- Liberty Post #14, American Legion and Alford-Clark Post #852, VFW and the 96th Black Hawk Association. Mr. Kappelman received his Bachelor's Degree from KU in 1948, and earned his Master's Degree in Political Science also from KU in 1950. He was a real estate broker and had been a partner at Calvin-EddyKappelman Insurance and Real Estate for many years before his retirement. He was twice awarded the Lawrence Realtor of the Year. In the 1960's, Mr. Kappelman was a leading advocate to abolish discriminatory housing practices in Lawrence. He actively worked on the Lawrence Planning Commission and many other civic committees to improve life and the infrastructure in the city of Lawrence. An award-winning video created in 1999, "Through My Sights", documented Mr. Kappelman's WWII experiences. A companion book followed last year. He also published numerous books, maps and lithographs highlighting Lawrence and KU historical subjects. Mr. Kappelman worked with, or was a member of, the Lawrence Democrats, the Chamber of Commerce, KU Alumni Association, Watkins Community Museum, Lawrence Arts Center, Lawrence Stamp Club and both the Centennial and Sesquicentennial Committees. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church and Sigma Phi Epsilon. He marred Elizabeth "Betty" J. Lloyd on January 4, 1953, in Spring Hill, KS. She survives of the home. Kappelman of Mission Hills, KS; one son, Matthew Kappelman of Lawrence; one sister, Mrs. Neal (LaVerne) Harris of Celebration, FL; and one granddaughter, Carlisle Elizabeth Steer. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Stanley and was a Presbyterian his entire life, serving as an Elder in four different churches. He served as an adult volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America as a merit badge counselor and adult leader for 30 years. He was employed by Trans World Airlines, Finance Division, for 36 years before his retirement in 1979. He traveled extensively, having circled the globe twice, and accumulated over two million airline passenger miles. The last 20 years of her career were spent as a Business Teacher and School leader at Shawnee Mission East High School. While at East, she worked for three principals, and implemented sweeping curricular changes. Mrs. Rendek was the faculty sponsor for the National Honor Society as well as the Practical Arts Division Coordinator from 1986-1997, having responsibility for the management and evaluation of Business, Vocational, Industrial Technology, and Home Economics teachers. June 12, 1949, Mr. Sanders married Katherine Lee Wade in a ceremony at the Odessa First Christian Church. They were the parents of a son, Steven Wade Sanders. Mr. Sanders was foreman of the Water and Industrial Waste Plant at Lake City Army Arsenal, where he retired in January, 1984, after 33 years employment. He was Past Noble Grand of Odessa Lodge No. 446, Independence Order of Odd Fellows and a member of all units of the fraternal order. He served as Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Missouri, IOOF in 1985-86. He served eight years as membership chairman for the worldwide Sovereign Grand Lodge, IOOF. He was a charter member and past president of the Lafayette County Historical Society. He served on the Odessa Board of Aldermen and co-chaired Odessa's Centennial Parade. Robert Edward Todd - Robert Edward Todd, 85, died March 29, 2004, at the Washington Center for Comprehensive Rehabilitation. A longtime resident of Eastsound, WA, Mr. Todd was born March 15, 1919, in Kansas City, MO, the son of Jesse Edward and Florence Champion Todd. Mr. Todd was commissioned 2nd Lt., USAF, serving as a pilot and combat bombing instructor during WWII. He worked as a technical writer, graphic artist, and design draftsman in Albuquerque and Los Alamos, NM, and later as a senior science illustrator for the Scripps Institute of Oceanography at Point Loma, CA. He married Billie O. Hensley in 1938. She died in 1994. Mr. Todd is survived by a niece, two grand-nieces, and many friends. Memorial services for Mr. Todd will be announced. Mabry "Duke" E. Wheeler - Mabry "Duke" E. Wheeler, 86, of Overland Park, KS, died peacefully March 27, 2004, at his home. He was born September 23, 1917, to Beaulah Hawkins and Clifford E. Wheeler in Kansas City, KS, and raised in Mound City, KS, by his beloved grandparents., Mert and Olive Hawkins, after his mother's sudden death when he was a young boy. Mr. Wheeler was extremely proud of his Irish heritage and his rearing in the Mount City/Blue Mount, KS, area. Mr. Wheeler graduated from Blue Mound High School. He went on to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps. Mr. Wheeler spent his active career life in many sales-oriented capacities. Most notably in heavy equipment sales and as owner of American Wood Products, a locally and nationally recognized cooking-woods distributor. His zest for life was evident in his dedication to his customers in the wood business and continuing to actively serve their needs until just a few weeks prior to his death. Mr. Wheeler took a great deal of pride in his affiliation with the KC Barbeque Society and previous membership in the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. All who knew and loved "Duke" appreciated his candor, humorous wit, intellect, endless stories of life experiences, pride, wisdom and no-nonsense approach to life. He displayed strength and courage through even the darkest hours of his life, specifically the death of his oldest son, Glenn E. Wheeler in 1982, and loss of his wife of 52 years, Mary Jane (Long) Wheeler in 2002. He is survived by his youngest son, Eugene C. "Duke" (Melva) Wheeler of Sacramento, CA; five grandchildren, Debbie L. Thurber-Wash of Florissant, MO, Christa A. (Dan) Nolfo of O'Fallon, MO, Glenda D. Wheeler of O'Fallon, MO, Sheila D. Wheeler of Tucson, AZ, and Mike Wheeler of San Diego, CA; eight great- grandchildren, Christopher Wheeler, Jennifer Seidel, Maddison Nolfo, Brooke Thurber, Casey Thurber, Austin Wheeler, Kealy Nolfo, Glenn Walsh; one great-great- grandson, Christopher Jack Schilligo-Wheeler; one sister, Jacqueline (Charles) Thompson of Chicago, IL; former wife and mother of his two sons, Clara B. There will be no formal services, however a private gathering will be held for immediate family and close friends at his residence to "Toast the Duke" with his trademark "5:00 Martini," at an undetermined time.
