Voss passed away Wednesday, April 7, 2004, following a long illness. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, April 10, at Heritage Funeral Home, Parkville, MO, where visitation will be 9:30-10 a.m. Jim was born December 27, 1933, in Columbia, TN, to Carolyn Johnson Voss and Gordon Voss. He married Toni Person in Nazareth, PA, June 17, 1971, following a three-year courtship. Jim was a highly decorated U.S. Army veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars. Like his father, Jim was a Freemason, earning a 32nd degree standing. He held memberships in the Grand York Rite Bodies of Mississippi, Grand Lodge of Mississippi, F.& A.M., and the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, S.J., U.S.A., in Denver. Jim's extensive civic service and behind-the-scenes political activism began with his move to Kansas City in 1975. His civic involvements included eight years service on the Kansas City Public Improvement Advisory Committee, Northland Betterment Committee, Highway 45 Study Committee, Northland for Progress Committee, Northland Coalition, Platte County Senior Needs Assessment Committee and subsequently Platte County Senior Services Board of Directors, Citizens Association Board of Governors and Board of Directors, Platte County Eleemosynary Society, and the League of Women Voters. Jim loved the political arena. He worked on many political campaigns, beginning with former neighbor Mike Burke's initial run for the Kansas City City Council. Often in partnership with his wife, Jim was sought out for advice on election and policy issues by political office holders and candidates. Jim was known for his quick wit, wisdom, big heart and loyalty. Jim pledged to take care of his mother-in-law following her husband's death. He made good on the promise, as he and Toni welcomed Toni's mother into their home from 1985 until her death in 2000. Jim rarely took "no" for an answer, especially where friends were concerned. When informed about obstacles friends faced in trying to accomplish a task, Jim's response was to grab the phone and utter in his Tennessee drawl, "Well, we'll just see about that." Children and teenagers found a warm and generous friend in Jim, often sitting next to him to talk over problems, play a game of chess, or examine an old coin or other artifact. Anonymous "random acts of kindness" were standard operating procedure for Jim. Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 33 years; his brother, Gordon Voss, sister-in-law, Rosa, and family; his sister, Dorothy Wilkes, brother-in-law, Donald, and family; and many friends.
