Louise Mae (Clark) Drake - September 2, 1903April 10, 2004 Louise Mae Drake, 100 years old, gently departed this life Saturday, April 10, 2004, at Overland Park Manor, where she had resided the last 11 years. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 105th & Holmes, Kansas City, MO, where visitation will be 2-3 p.m.; burial in Johnson County Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the Overland Park Manor Residents Counsel, 6501 W. 75th St., Overland Park, KS 66204. Louise had been a resident of Overland Park Manor since February 1993 and had enjoyed her home, taking part in many activities and outings, and always listening to her beloved Royals baseball, loving the wins, and taking the losses in stride. In 1980, at the age of 77, she attended every single Royals home game, rain or shine, wind or cold - - and prided herself as the biggest Royals fan ever. Louise was born in Springfield, MO, the fourth of five children, three girls and two boys, and, after losing her parents as a young girl of three, the children were raised by their extended family, with Louise going to live with a cousin. She grew into young adulthood, when she and her younger sister then entered nursing school, and Louise soon met the man that would become her husband, John Petts Drake. Louise and John were married June 22, 1926, and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary together in 1976. John passed away the November afterwards. John and Louise raised two children, a daughter, Iris Mae, and a son, John Petts Drake, Jr. They were devoted to their children, raising them in a Christian household, and with their home serving as the center of activity for their friends. Many a friend of their children's came by and made the home a favorite place to spend time, and to share memories, even after they were grown and had children of their own. Louise was a member of the old Oak Park Christian Church on 43rd and Montgall, in Kansas City, beginning her membership and service to her church in the early 1930s. In later years, when the church built a larger building and relocated, she and John moved their memberships to the new church, Red Bridge Christian Church, in south Kansas city, MO. Louise served her church well, serving as president of her Sunday school class, the "Standby's," and also spending many enjoyable hours and sharing culinary skills in the kitchen there. She was always ready to lend a hand with fundraisers and activities. Her husband was active as well, and supported her dedication to her church by working right alongside Louise. Besides raising two children, "Nana," as she was known by her grandchildren, was an active grandmother, babysitting with her four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and even trying her hand with two great-greatgrandchildren! After breaking a hip in 1993, Louise moved to Overland Park Manor, where she recuperated. She became very active, joining in the enthusiastic sing-a-longs there, and becoming a pretty good bingo player. She also served on the Resident Committee and shared her opinions on activities to be planned, and outings for the residents. This past September of 2003, Louise celebrated her 100th birthday in style, with five generations, and enough cake and well-wishers to make it a very memorable birthday. Louise was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, John Petts Drake; her son, John Petts Drake, Jr., and her grandson, Dennis Michael Lowery. Her siblings also predeceased her. She leaves a daughter, Iris Drake Martin, granddaughter, Dianne Lowery Young, two grandsons, Don Lowery and David Lowery, two great-granddaughters, two great- grandsons, one great-greatgranddaughter, two great-greatgrandson, and many nieces and nephews.
