McGahan Up-dated: September 27, 2011 McGahan Cemetery Est. 1845 This cemetery is part of 260 acres bought by George McGahan in 1807. A native of Pennsylvania where his parents died when he was a small child. He was adopted by a family in Pennsylvania, who moved to Virginia then soon after moved to Missouri. One of the oldest settlers of San Francois County, Missouri. It is not known when George McGahan came to Missouri but he was here in time to serve in the War of 1812, he served as Orderly Sergeant. In 1817 when several of the citizens of the Territory petitioned the Government to grant statehood he was one of the signers. When Washington County was organized the Governor appointed George McGahan as one of the Judges, he was reelected in 1822 and served as Associate Judge in 1823-24. In 1825 he was elected as Presiding Judge for San Francois County. He married Miss Rachel Doggett in 1818 the daughter of George Doggett who was the owner of Doggett’s Mines. There are twenty people buried in this cemetery, these known burials were from 1845 to 1912 The first person buried here was Rachel J. McGahan, a daughter of George McGahan and Rachel Doggett. Died December 2 1848 [adopted by a family after his parents died in Pennsylvania. This stone is almost unreadable. Asa Alexander McGahan, born Jan. 24 1834 died June 10 1861 [s/o George & Rachel McGahan] Mary Ann (McGahan) Murphy, born Oct. 9 1826 died Dec 2 1873 [w/o Addison Murphy] [d/o George & Rachel McGahan]. Louisa Elizabeth (McGahan) Kidd, born Apr 2 1838 died Jan 26 1881 [w/o Randall Kidd] [d/o George & Rachel McGahan] Leslie Valentine Fite, born Feb. 1, 1884 died Aug. 24 1884 6 months old [s/o Willie E. & Sallie A. Fite] This stone is now missing but was there in 2002 [Willis is a brother to Helen [nee Fite] McGahan he was a lumber dealer in Big River Mills] Rachel R. (Murphy) Carrow, born Nov 8 1859 died Nov 19 1885 [Note on stone reads died two days after Little Rachel was born] [w/o Charley H. Henry Clay McGahan was the last known person buried here and fitting it is because he bought the land which embraces the old homestead on which Henry was born.
