SCHAEFER burials, St. Peter & Paul Cemetery, St. Louis, Missouri These monuments are located at the Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery on Gravois Street in Saint Louis City, Missouri. The information was taken from pictures of the stones in the summer of 1976 and the sexton records. The plot was purchased by Barbara Schaefer on 21 December 1905 immediately after the death of her husband, Hermann. The plot, located near some tall, white Irish crosses contains the south half of Lot 30. The sexton records note that Barbara paid for "Perpetual Care." The main monument is on a large platform, with a square block on its end. Topping the block is a cross bearing the raised inscription "IHS". The inscription on the blocked is in raised, blocked, capital letters. It is apparently situated in the upper right corner of the plot. Hermann is buried at the foot of his name while Barbara is at the foot of her name. SCHAEFER HERMAN 1840-1905 FATHER BARBARA 1841-1913 MOTHER These are the immigrant ancestors. They are my great-grandparents, Herman Schaefer and Barbara Schubert. I first found them in the St. Louis 1870 U. S. Census. At least two of their three sons are buried in the same plot with markers of identical design. Their two daughters are buried in a cemetery near Los Angeles, California. At Rest HERMAN G. SCHAEFER OCT. 13, 1876/MARCH 15, 1931 This is my grandfather. Born in Saint Louis, he died in North Hollywood, California. His wife and son accompanied his body back to Saint Louis on the train to be buried next to his parents. He is buried to the left of his father. At Rest JULIUS G. SCHAEFER DEC. 19, 1878/JUNE 23, 1957 This is "Uncle Jule", my grandfather's brother. Although he visited his brother and sisters in California a few times, he was born, lived and died in Saint Louis. He is buried at the foot of his father. There is a fifth marker, which was unreadable at the time we were at the cemetery. A check of the sexton's records showed the name on the records, but at that time we were not aware of who this person was. It was obviously a child's burial place as the casket is half the size of the others. The sexton thought the child was "not a member of the original owners' family." Looking at the copy of the sexton's records, the child is listed as "George Medeck, 11-5-1907." Research of the past few years now identifies this child as the son of Hermann and Barbara's daughter, Ann Marie Schaefer and her husband, Francis John Medek. His name was George Herman Medek, born 12 September 1892 and died 14 January 1895 of diphtheria. He was originally buried in the cemetery at St. John Nepomuk Roman Catholic Church in Saint Louis, Missouri. He was apparently moved to the present site to "be with his grandfather."
