Pitt Western College Reporter, April 1, 1862 Benton Barracks, Missouri- It becomes my solemn duty to announce that our comrade and fellow soldier, George W. Pitt, is no more. He departed this life at 5 o’clock, P.M. on the 6th of December, 1861. His disease was measles. George died like a soldier and Christian. On the same day of his death, I spent several hours at his bedside, and a short time before he breathed his last, he took me by the hand and said “Lieutenant Shuey, I’ll not shoot any on the battlefield, but I think I have done my duty to my country. I put my trust in my Savior, and I feel resigned to his will.” He was rational to the last, and died without a groan or struggle. The next day our company with the chaplain, followed his remains to the grave. Although the soldier soon becomes familiar with scenes of death, yet it was with heartfelt sorrow that our company followed their late comrade to his last resting place on earth. His usual place in the rank was now vacant, and in our march to the graveyard, which is beautifully situated South West of the City of St. Louis, no sound was heard, save the muffled drum or the slow measured step of the sorrowing associates. After an appropriate prayer, by our regimental chaplain, all that was mortal of George W. Pitt was consigned to the silent grave, with the belief that the Lord is the resurrection and the life and though our friend is dead but shall live again.
