Tuck juneet@verizon.net April 8, 2007, 2:01 pm Grand Reunion Of Confederate Veterans Missourians Held In Texas (Dallas Weekly Herald, Aug. 11, 1881) GRAND REUNION Of Ex-Confederate Missourians at Shady View Park Today - Distinguished Arrivals and List of Visitors, Inc. Today, at Shady View park, the reunion of ex-confederate Missourians takes place. The trains yesterday brought in a good many of them from Missouri and different parts of Texas and some from Louisiana, and by night fall the hotels were well filled. The resident ex-Missourians formed themselves into a reception committee and entertained their guests at Craddock's Opera House, refreshing them with several large bowls of o'aret punch dashed with champagne. The evening was spent in social conversation, recalling the past and reviewing the late war in which they played such brave and prominent parts in a hopeless cause. This is the first reunion ever held of the ex-confederate Missourians. The movement was placed on foot and gotten up by a few ex- Missourians of this city. This is the first meeting of any size since the battle of Oak Hill. The Missourians in the confederate army were very much scattered during the war, but it only served to bind them closer together. The following is the program for today. 1. Street Parade - Queen City Band, Queen City Guards and Lamar Rifles, 9 o'clock a.m. 2. Music at Shady View Park - Reception at Park by Hon. J. W. Crowdus, Mayor of Dallas. 3. Music - Address of Welcome by Gen. L. M. Lewis, Waxahachie, Ellis County, Texas. 4. Music - Response by Gen. F. M. Cockrell, Missouri. 5. Recitation of Poem by young lady of Dallas. 6. Music - Dinner on ground. 7. Speeches by distinguished Visitors and General Social Enjoyment of the Day. 8. Exhibition Drill by the Gueen City Guards. Among the prominent Missourians present are: Colonel Bob McCullough, register of lands Michael McGrath, secretary of state Major Harvey W. Salmon, ex-state treasurer Major Lemon, clerk in the auditors office. Major J. P. Harrell of the 16th Missouri Captain W. C. Brannaugh, a prominent citizen of Henry County, Missouri James E. Cameron, editor of the Pleasant Hill Missouri Despatch Among the ex-Missourians from Texas are: James E. Caffee - Georgetown, Texas - formerly speaker of the house of representatives of Missouri Col. S. D. Jackman - San Marcos, who commanded a brigade of cavalry during the war Col. Tom Murray - McKinney, who commanded the 11th Missouri regiment, and who was a member of the board of fund commissioners under Governor Claiborne F. Jackson. Col. J. V. Cockrell - Sherman - brother of United States Senator Cockrell Dr. W. H. Trolinger - Grayson - a member at one time of the Missouri legislature, and since a member of the legislature of this state. Col. M. W. Buster - Weatherford, Texas - was run through with a bayonet at the battle of Oak Hill. Col. J. Q. Burbridge - Alton Illinois. The park where the reunion is to be held is at the terminus of the San Jacinto street railway. There are a good many already here and more are expected to arrive by the train today.
