Newspaper article: Death of John C. Underwood, St. Louis 1861 Fatally Bayonnetted at Lindell's Grove John Underwood, eighteen years of age, son of Mr. John C. Underwood, who is an old citizen of St. Louis died at half past three o'clock Saturday evening from a bayonet stab wound received at Camp Jackson last Friday. His companion on this fatal occasion a young gentleman named Henry Heath states to us substantially as follows: He and young Underwood fled southward when the firing began and sat down upon the grass near Laclode? Avenue soon after which they were made prisoners by a guard of U.S. Volunteers, who were also ????????? all that fled in that direction. Without the slightest provocation such in the witness state- ment a guardsman came up to them and thrust his bayonet into Underwood's back above and near the hip. The weapon penetrated about an inch. When at last the injured young man reached his home on the south side of Brooklyn street near Eleventh the best medical and surgical aid was administered, and various danger did not seem to be apprehended. The death resulted from opening? inflammation and internal hemorrhage. Deceased was buried before an inquest had been held.
