Letter: From John Underwood May 12, 1861 St. Louis, Missouri St. Louis May 12th 1861 Dr. Burres, Dear Sir, I wrote to William Underwood a week ago and have not received any reply fearing that all is not well with him. I address this to you hoping you will inform me of his welfare. We buried John his brother yesterday who fell a victim to the enemy of this country the Dutch that pretendes for a cloak to better their atrotious ?????? under the United States Flag encouraged by the abolationists of the north ---- we are in the midst of war here but ch times the citty never saw before, God deliver us from our enemies here ----- you doubtedly have seen the papers of the citty and know our situation if William is alive tell him to writ once a weak at least --- direct letters to Vitula Kennedy No. 102 Brooklin Street St. Louis -- if seen that letters directed to me might be intercepted in sutch times.
