Letter: Vitula Kennedy to her brother March 17, 1861, St. Louis, Mo. Vitula Underwood Kennedy is the daughter of John C. Underwood and Lucinda Campbell Underwood. The letter is to her brother William D. Under- wood (this letter has water and ink damage and a few words are unreadable) St. Louis March 17, 1861 Dear Brother, I take this opportunity to answer your kinde favor of the 22 and I hope that this will find you in good health as it leaves us with the exceptions of Ada and Mollie who has got the whooping cough. Ada is mostly well but Mollie has it very bad yet. I have no news to write of any importance. There is nothing doing at none of the Foundryes? and the Lord only knows when there will be. There has been great excitement in the city all ????? first about this? ???????? but they have not inad?????? ????? yet. The military gardes has been all about and two or three times they are kept in the city in buildings? all the time as there is so many men out of imployment all winter they have nothing to live on so the would just as soon fight as not and is hard to keep them down The dutch and irish liked to come togather about a week ago about a sesion flag that some smart fellows put up but they finely got things all right again. John sais he wishes you would rent a peace of ground and he would come out and help you tend it fore he cant get any work here. Mother got a letter from granny not long ago and she is in pretty good health. Tell Mary I would like to come out there this summer and see her very much but I fear that I cant come as the times is to harde for me to go any where so I may close begging you to write soon and often so nothing much here at the present.
