St. Louis County, Missouri Obituaries - Leon Burrow St. Louis Post-Dispatch January 28, 1993 Section: Obits Edition: Five Star Page 04C Leon Burrow Leon Burrow, owner and founder of the Courtesy Sandwich Shop, died Wednesday (Jan. 27, 1993) of a heart ailment at St. Anthony's Medical Center in south St. Louis County. He was 83. Mr. Burrow, of Sappington, opened his first shop in 1933, and by the 1950s he had 10. Courtesy Shops were known for their "slinger," a dish made with eggs and hash brown potatoes and topped with chili. Mr. Burrow started reducing his business during the 1960s and 1970s, eventually ending up with only one sandwich shop-which he still owned-at 3153 South Kingshighway. His nephew, Leon Caldwell, has run the diner for about the past two years. A native of Jonesboro, Ark., Mr. Burrow came to St. Louis about 1930. After arriving in the city, he first donned his white apron and chef's cap at a small St. Louis neighborhood grill for a short time before opening the first Courtesy shop. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the John L. Ziegenhein and Sons Mortuary, 7027 Gravois Boulevard. Burial will be a Lakewood Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
