We were an apprentice in the office of the old "Louisiana Gazette," at the time Mr. Charless purchased that establishment of Mr. J. C. Cummings, and in 1822, as such, struck the first "Missouri Republican." It will this be perceived that we had known him long, and had opportunity to know him intimately -- and we but follow the dictates of a heart won to a lasting friendship by his kindness and virtues, when we say he was the Printer's friend, always liberal and generous, and a man whose loss will be deplored by all who knew him.
