CULBERTSON Laban H. Culbertson , son of the Eli and Arkan Culbertson and one of a family of 15 children, was born on a farm near Dexter, June 12, 1859. As a young man he engaged in farming near Dexter, then, moved to town and established a machine and blacksmith shop which is one of the oldest concerns in the city. In 1881 he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Norman, who passed away June 25, 1913. On December 28, 1919 he married Miss Bessie Murphy of Poplar Bluff. About 6 weeks ago Mr. Culbertson was taken seriously ill and was confined to his bed until his passing Friday night, Feb. 19, 1943 at 11 o'clock. He was 83 years, 8 months, and 7 days of age. He was one of the oldest and most influential citizens of the community. For a number of years he had served on the Board of Directors for the Citizens Bank of Dexter, being recently relieved of that responsibility because of failing health. He professed faith in Christ as his Savior and was baptized into the fellowship of the First Baptist Church of this city on August 5, 1904. He was always a loyal and faithful member, making many sacrifices for his church in time and money. For a number of years he was the senior member of the Deacon Board. He had served as superintendent of the Sunday school and was chairman of the building committee when the present church edifice was erected. He was a member of the present board of trustees, and was caretaker until recently when poor health made it necessary for him to be relieved from the responsibility. Truely, the church as lost one of her most devoted members and loyal workers. Mr. Culbertson leaves to cherish his memory his devoted companion; 2 brothers: Eli culbertson of Bloomfield and Bob Culbertson of Dexter; several nieces and nephews, a number of other relatives and a great multitude of friends. Active pallbearers were G. L.Jeffries, Dr. S. T. Cannon, Geo. McCracken, J. N. Moffett, B. L. Jeffries, and T. S. Hill. Honorary pallbearers were Geo. Riddle, Sam Williams, Tom Kennedy, Graydon Ulen, Russell Sisler, Chas. Darby, Fred Cole and Ralph Huston. Funeral services were held at the family home on West Castor, Sunday afternoon, Feb 21st by Chaplain Russell T. Phillips of the U.S. Army. Interment in Sadler's Chapel cemetery. Watkins service.
