ULYSSES GRANT4 MADDOX (SAMSON SANFORD3, WILLIAM2, JOHN ?1) was born August 13, 1864 in Pendleton County, Kentucky, and died January 17, 1916 in Duck Creek Township, Stoddard County, Missouri. He married MILLIE MAE FUNKHOUSER February 17, 1889 in Dahlgren Township, Hamilton County, Illinois. 1871: When Grant was 7 years old, his family moved from Pendleton Co., KY, where his father's side had lived (in nearby Bracken Co., KY,) for 40 years, and his mother's side had lived nearly 100 years, to Dahlgren Twp., Hamilton Co., IL. 1886: July 26, when Grant was just 22 years old, he purchased for $275 from R.E. Miller & wife 80 acres. This was one year after his grandfather, William Maddox, died, so perhaps he was left a little money to which he added his own to make this large purchase. It was located as follows: SE 1/4 of the SW 1/4 of Section 23 of Twp. 3 of Range 5E 1889: February 17, he met Millie Mae Funkhouser in Champaign Co. just north of Hamilton, and they were married by J. H. Voliva, a minister. Their fathers signed as witnesses. 1890: Sept. 29, Grant purchased for $250 from Joseph W. Redden and wife who had moved to Topeka, Ks., 40 acres: SW 1/4 of the SW 1/4 of Section 10 Twp. 4 Range 5 1896: Aug. 21, purchased for $300 from Jasper Jines & wife 20 acres: E 1/2 of the SW 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of Section 36 Twp. 3 Range 5E 3rd Prime Meridian 1896: Grant moved his family now with three children (Frank, Lou, and Ina ~ a 4th died the previous year) to Acorn Ridge, Stoddard Co., MO. 1896: Dec. 12, Grant and wife of Acorn Ridge in Stoddard Co., MO, sold their last 20 acres purchased four months earlier to David Underwood for $260. OIne named Dan and the other Bill." [Source: Deed in posssession of Donald Maddox, Dexter, MO] 1916: Jan. 17, Ulysses Grant Maddox died. He was a close friend and co- worker of my other grandfather, Frank Goble, who said Grant wouldn't buy personal things for himself though he had a good home and his family was always well dressed, so he often went out to the woods to cut timber without hat or gloves. After a particularly cold day in January, he went home sick, ended up with pneumonia, and died. He was just 51 years old. His youngest child, Clarence, was three. My father, Tucker, had just turned 13 the day before. There were still eight children in the home for his widow to finish raising alone. Being raised without a father is very hard on children, especially the boys. Grant was buried in Rock Hill Cemetery. The funeral cost $86.00, a lot of money a century ago. I wonder if his parents (aged 81 and 73), still living in Hamilton Co., IL, were able to attend the funeral. 1916: May 16, to get some money to live on, Grant's widow, Millie Mae, sold for "good and sufficient consideration" to Louie Neal, 40 acres in Butler Co.: NW 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of Section 12 Twp. 24N Range 7E of the 5th Prime Meridian 1916: June 3, Grant's widow also sold for $1000 to Louie Neal and J. C. Martin the attached 40 acres in Butler Co.: NE 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of Section 12 Twp. 24N Range 7E 1916: July and August, Grant's widow took a train to Bebee, Ark, where some of their land was, and probably sold it at that time. I do not have the deed.
