Biographical Sketch of Spencer M. Hubbard, Texas County, Missouri

Spencer M. Hubbard, clerk of Texas County Court, was born in Texas
County, MO., February 5, 1857, and is the son of John H. and Louisa
C. (Mitchell) Hubbard, natives of Randolph County, MO., and White
County, Tenn., respectively.  The father was born April 8, 1821.
He attended medical college at St. Louis, but graduated at New York
City.  He then practiced medicine in Pocahontas, Ark., for some time,
and then came to Texas County, MO., in about 1848, where he resided
until his death, with the exception of the last two years of the war,
when he resided in Gasconade County, MO.  He was one of the first
physicians in Texas County and it may truthfully be said, one of the
best.  He was a member of the Masonic fraternity, and a Democrat in
politics.  He died March 6, 1867.  The mother was born September 22,
1834, and is the daughter of Spencer and Susan Mitchell, now of 
Salem, and two of the oldest people in Southern Missouri.  They were
among the first settlers of that State.  Mrs. Hubbard is still a re-
sident of Texas County.  In 1872 she married John C. Lea, who died
in 1884.  She is a member of the Christian Church.  By her marriage
to Dr. Hubbard, which occurred in 1852, were born six sons and one
daughter, viz.: James M., a physician in Wright County, MO; John H.,
Martha Ann, wife of R. B. Lynch, of Plato, MO.; S. M., Charles B., a
farmer of Texas County, MO; Frank P., also a farmer in Texas County,
but who has also studied medicine; and Robert P., who is now attending
the School of Physicians and Surgeons at St. Louis, MO.  Spencer M.
Hubbard, subject of this sketch, received his education at Salem, MO.
under Prof. Lynch.  After this he farmed, taught school, and studied
medicine under his brother James M.  In 1880-81 he attended medical
lectures at St. Louis, and in the latter year he located at Elk Creek,
Texas County, where he engaged in the practice of his profession. Soon
after he went to Mountain Grove and formed a partnership with his bro-
ther.  In 1884 he came to Cabool, where he again began the practice of
medicine, which he continued until elected county clerk, in 1886.  On
June 7, 1877, he married the daughter of Robert W. and Clara (Bundy)
Hardin, who were also among the earliest settlers of Texas County, MO.
Mrs. Hubbard was born in Wright County, MO., February 5, 1859, and by
her marriage became the mother of four children: Eunice, James H. and
Tom.  Minnie died when one year, one month and fifteen days of age.
Mrs. Hubbard is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and
is an excellent lady.  Dr. Hubbard is a member of the Masonic frater-
nity, I. O. O. F., and is a decided Democrat in politics.
