James married Vany Turner April 8, 1846 in Knox County, Tennessee. Sylvania (Vania) Turner was the daughter of John & Vany (Hopper) Turner. James & Sylvania Neal came to Turley, Texas County 1859. I believe James mother to be Jemima Harker Neal from other researchers & research done by the Fielden family. His father has never been discovered. His mother married 2nd to James Fielden August 1st 1831 in Jefferson County, Tennessee. Three other children were born to this union. John W.Fielden, Mary Fielden & Benjamin Ai Fielden. After James Fielden died Jemima married 3rd to John Hodges in Jefferson County, Tennessee July 30, 1846. Jemima used her maiden name Harker as her first name sometimes. We know the Fielden’s also moved to Texas County, Missouri from Tennessee when James & Vania moved to Missouri 1859. Sylvania (Vania) Turner Neal’s sister Sarah Turner was married to Dempsey Fielden who was a relative of James Fielden. From older ancestors the Neal & Fielden’s were a very close nit family. The earliest record I have of James Milton is a church record from Mill Springs Baptist Church in Jefferson County, Tennessee. His mother was listed also as Harker Fielden. Per phone conversation with Marvel Fielden who wrote the book “ The Fielden Stream” These notes are from the Mill Springs Baptist Church records. 1830: Milton Neal was attending church August 1843: Milton Neal joined the church & received membership 1845: Milton Neal was dismissed from the church along with Josiah Fielden for drunkenness. November 1848: Vania Neal joined the church Feburary 1849: A charge was brought against Harker & Hodge because they refused to live together, they were living separate. And Harker was charged with selling liquor. March 1849: Harker confessed to selling liquor, said she was sorry and she would quit. Repented. May 1849: Harker was excluded from the church because Hodge and Harker refused to live together. Military records: Missouri James M. Neal, private 10th Missouri Infantry C.S.A. It seems to me that he was captured while serving in one of these two units (probably Freeman’s Calvary) and when he was exchanged he enlisted in the 10th Mo. Inf. James M. Neal 10th Missouri Infantry Rank at induction: Private Rank at Discharge: Private Allegiance: Confederate James Neal Company: A Unit: Freeman’s Regiment, Missouri Cavalry Rank at Induction: Private Rank at Discharge: Private Allegiance: Confederate James Milton Neal is listed in a book on “Missouri Prisoners of War” From Gratiot Street Prison & Myrtle Street Prison, St. Louis, Missouri and Alton Prison, Alton, Illinois Including Citizens, Confederate, Bushwhackers and Guerrillas written by Joanne Chiles Eakin 1995.
