Biographical Sketch of Elijah B. Matthews, Washington County, Missouri >From "History of Franklin, Jefferson, Washington, Crawford and Gasconade Counties", Biographical Appendix, Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1888. ********************************************************************** Elijah B. Matthews, deceased, was born in North Carolina in 1811, and when a boy was brought to Wayne County, Mo. On reaching manhood he came to Washington County, where, in 1837, he married Sarah B. Powell, who was born in Virginia in 1815. She was taken to Kentucky when about four years old, and brought to Missouri about 1840. Mr. Mathew's chief occupation was lead mining and farming. He was a Democrat in politics, and died in 1875. His wife still lives. Their family consisted of eight children, three sons and five daughters: Aree C., Fannie L., Ambrose P., Laura A., Lucy A., Josie M., Edward H. and John T. The latter has charge of the old home place. He is a Democrat and is one of the upright citizens of the county. His wife, Amanda (Wisdom) Matthews, is a native of Washington County, Mo.
