For more information please contact at: Lizlauner@cs.com As far as I know, this file is the only one in which court documents for African-Americans in Washington County, Missouri, are separated. The file consists of 29 Bonds for Emancipation and 7 Indentures of ?free? Negro children. Part I: Bonds (29 records) These Bonds generally follow this wording (see below for the names in these documents): Know all men by these presents that I (name of free Negro) as principal and (name of co-signer) as security are held and firmly bound unto the State of Missouri in the sum of one hundred dollars lawful money of the United Sates for which payment will and truly to be made we bind ourselves our heirs executors and administrators jointly and severally firmly by these presents sealed with our seals and dated. Potosi (date). The condition of this bond is such that whereas the above named (name of free Negro) as aforesaid has obtained from the County Court of Washington County a License to reside within the State of Missouri. Now if the said (name of free Negro) as above shall be of good character and behavior and conduct herself according to law so long as she remains within the State of Missouri then this obligation to be void else to remain in full force and virtue. Nov. 8th 1845 Note: File also includes a certificate filed Sept 10th 1845 by John Perry, stating: ?To all whom it may concern I do hereby certy that I knew Jane Fusser all my life. She is about sixty years of age and belonged to my Father Col John Perry and was brought to this country in 1806 by him, the understanding that she with her increase was to be free at the age of Twenty Eight. The said Jane was set free as above by my father at the age of Twenty Eight and had free Papers given to her which she says she has lost. Rachel is her daughter and was given to Mrs. Rachel Dunklin until she was free at the age of Twenty Eight and has been at liberty ever since she was Twenty Eight so that both Jane Fusser and her daughter are both Free people and should so be considered by all persons.? Part II: Indentures (7) These records are worded as follows (see below for the names in these documents): This indenture, witnesseth that whereas by the Statues of this State in such cases made and provided, the county court is authorized and required to bind out to be apprentices or servants all free Negroes and mulatoes between the age of seven and twenty one years until they arrive at the age of twenty one years, and whereas it appears to the satisfaction of the county court of Washington County that (name of free Negro), now is free and by the laws of this State is entitled to her freedom; now therefore be it know[n] that in pursuance of the Statutes of this State as aforesaid the County Court of Washington County hath put and placed and by these presents doth put and place the said (name of free Negro) l as a servant to (name of master) of the County of Washington aforesaid to learn her habits of industry. The Said (name of free Negro) after the manner of a servant to dwell with and serve the said (name of Master) from the date hereof until she is twenty one years of age, during all which time on term the said (name of free Negro), her master will faithfully serve, his Secrets keep, and his lawful commands every where and at all times readily obey, She shall do no damage to her master nor willingly suffer any to be done by others, She shall not waste the goods of her Master, nor lend them unlawfully to any from the service of her said Master. She shall not absent herself, but in all things and at all times she shall carry and behave herself as a good and faithful servant ought during the whole time or term of service and the said (name of Master), on his part doth hereby promise, covenant and agree to instruct the said (name of free Negro) or cause it to be done so far as she may be able and capable to learn the habits of Industry, by the best way and means he can and shall and will faithfully find and provide for the said Servant, good and sufficient meat and drink, clothing and lodging and other necessaries fit and suitable for such servant, during the time aforesaid and at the expirations of the said term to give her a new Bible and two new suits of clothes to be worth ($20-$40) and ten dollars in current money and also in lieu of Education to give her ($15 - $75) in Current Money.
