Biographical Sketch of John Bass, Webster County, Missouri >From "History of Laclede, Camden, Dallas, Webster, Wright, Texas, Pulaski, Phelps and Dent Counties, Missouri" The Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1889. ********************************************************************** John Bass was born on the 25th of November, 1828, in Marion County, Tenn., and is a son of Andrew Bass, who was born in North Carolina, but was reared and married in Tennessee, in which State his wife, whose maiden name was Ellen Smith, was born. They located near Spring- field, Mo., in 1830, where Mr. Bass homesteaded and entered land, and on which he resided until his death, which occurred about 1863. He was quite a hunter, and killed many deer and a few bears. Eight sons and five daughters grew to mature years, and all became the heads of famil- ies, and five sons and five daughters are living at the present time. John Bass was reared in Greene county, and was there married in 1850 to Miss Samentha Owens, who was born and reared in Greene county, and immediately engaged in tilling the soil on his own responsibility. He became the owner of his present property in 1868, which consists of 125 acres, but at one time his land amounted to 400 acres, the most of which he gave to his children. He has about 100 acres of cleared land, and a substantial residence and other buildings. His wife died in 1856 leaving two children: Sarah C., wife of W. A. Stratton, of Greene county, and Jasper A. J., who is married and resides in Webster County. In 1857 Mr. Bass married his present wife, Miss Angeline Hartley, who was born in Tennessee and reared in Webster county, being a daughter of Jesse Hartley. Their union has been blessed in the birth of four children: Jesse W., who is married and is a resident of the county; John W., also married; Margaret F., wife of David Bodenhamer; and Benton, a young man of eighteen years.
