Biographical Sketch of Lewis S. Cass, Webster County, Missouri

Lewis S. Cass, farmer, stock raiser and trader of East Dallas township,
was born in Madison county, N. Y., November 3, 1837, being a son of 
Hon. Dudley Cass, who was born and reared in New Hampshire.  The latter
went to New York when a young man, and there met and married, in Madi-
son county, Miss Martha Robbins, who was also a native of New Hampshire.
In 1843 Mr. Cass moved with his family to Wisconsin, settling in Ken-
osha county, where he made a farm and reared his family, then came to
Missouri and lived with his son in Springfield until 1870.  His death
occurred in 1884, at the age of seventy-three years.  He served as 
colonel in a company of militia at one time, and was a member of the
Wisconsin Legislature one term.  His widow survives him, and resides in
Springfield with her daughter, Theresa A. Cass, a maiden lady.  Her two
sons are Lewis S. and Kimble, the latter being a resident of the old
homestead in Wisconsin.  Lewis S. Cass was reared to manhood in Wiscon-
sin, and received a good education in the common schools and an academy 
in Kenosha county, in which institution he took a three years' course.
He afterward engaged in teaching in Wisconsin and Northern Illinois for
three years, and afterward located on a farm in Lake county, of the
latter state, but at the end of two years removed to Benton county,
Iowa, where he spent two years in farming and stock raising.  In the
spring of 1866 he moved to Missouri, and located in Springfield, where
he taught in the public schools for two years.  From 1869 to 1885 he
was engaged in merchandising in that city, and while there built two
good business blocks and a good brick residence.  After selling these
he purchased his present farm of 444 acres on Dry Creek, a goodly por-
tion of which is bottom land, and 250 acres are under cultivation.  He
has a commodious two story frame residence, two large frame barns and
one log barn, very large.  In 1862 he was married, in Kenosha county,
Wis., to Miss Charlotte Collier, who was born, reared and educated in
New York, and by her is the father of six children: Mary, Burdella,
Dudley, Emma, Fannie and Lydia.  Mrs. Cass is a member of the Baptist
Church, and Mr. Cass belongs to the K. of H., and while a resident of
Springfield served as city alderman of his ward.
