Biographical Sketch of Samuel H. Caldwell, Webster County, Missouri >From "History of Laclede, Camden, Dallas, Webster, Wright, Texas, Pulaski, Phelps and Dent Counties, Missouri" The Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1889. ********************************************************************** Samuel H. Caldwell, retired farmer and merchant of Henderson, Mo., was born in Lee county, Va., November 30, 1833. His father, Samuel Cald- well, was a Kentuckian, but was reared, educated and married in Virginia, the latter event being to Miss Eliza Cissel, of Virginia. In 1840 they came to Greene county, Mo., where they reared their family and spent the greater part of their remaining days, the father's death occurring in Henderson about 1875. Samuel H. Caldwell remained with his father until eighteen years of age, and March 17, 1853, was married in Webster county, Mo., to Miss Sidney C. Caldwell, a daughter of Col. Andrew Caldwell, who died at Chester, Ill., having served in the War of 1812. Mr. Caldwell first located in Cole county, Ill., but in 1856 came to Henderson, and the following year opened a tan yard, which business he had learned in boyhood, and followed this occupation until 1864. He owned all the land where the town of Henderson now is, and assisted in laying out the town, the first store being built about 1868 by A. T. Graves, Dr. Allen and Mr. Caldwell. The latter has served as county assessor and justice of the peace, and during the late war he served in the State Militia, being called out on two or three occas- sions. His wife is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and their union has been blessed in the birth of the following children: W. S., a farmer of Webster county, Mo.; Frederick J., a dentist, and Ollie J., who resides with her parents. ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
