Biographical Sketch of Samuel C. Crawford, Webster County, Missouri >From "History of Laclede, Camden, Dallas, Webster, Wright, Texas, Pulaski, Phelps and Dent Counties, Missouri" The Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1889. ********************************************************************** Samuel C. Crawford, one of the leading merchants of Webster county, Mo. was born in Washington county, Ark., November 4, 1860, being the son of Samuel C. and Elizabeth (Harron) Crawford, natives of Tennesee and Washington county, Ark., respectively. The father was born May 20, 1818 and the mother October 29, 1825. He is a farmer, has followed this occupation all his life, is a Democrat in politics, was justice of the peace for three years, and he and wife are members of the Methodist Protestant Church. He served in the Confederate service during the war and was a brave and gallant soldier. He and wife are now living, and are residents of Washington county, Ark. They were the parents of thirteen children, ten of whom lived to be grown, and nine now living. Of this family Samuel C. is the youngest. He remained with his parents until 1882, when he began for himself by farming and dealing in stock in Washington county, Ark. The same year he came to Missouri, locating in Webster county, and October 4, 1884, engaged in merchandising. He carries a stock of goods valued at from $2,000 to $2,500, with annual sales that equal from $8,000 to $12,000. In connection with his merc- antile business he also buys and handles a great deal of railroad ties and lumber. November 25, 1877 he married Miss Tobitha M. Alexander, a native of Morgan county, Mo., born in 1857, and the daughter of H. H. Alexander. Two children have blessed this union: Martha Elizabeth and Samuel L.
