Biographical Sketch of Alexander G. Cardwell, Webster County, Missouri >From "History of Laclede, Camden, Dallas, Webster, Wright, Texas, Pulaski, Phelps and Dent Counties, Missouri" The Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1889. ********************************************************************** Alexander G. Cardwell was born in Webster county, Mo., on the 14th of December, 1837, and is a son of Dr. Thomas P. and Katie (Steward) Cardwell, who were born in Virginia and Tennessee, respectively. After their marriage they resided in Tennessee for a number of years, and about 1830 moved to Missouri, locating in what is now Webster county, where the father made a farm, reared his family, and resided until his death in September, 1882. He was a practicing physician for many years and served several terms as justice of the peace. His five sons and five daughters lived to mature years, and four sons and three daughters are living at the present time. Alexander G. Cardwell was reared near his present place of abode, and during the late Civil War served in the Home Guards and State Militia. In 1858 he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Mobley, and soon after located in Douglas county, where he resided about three years, since which time he has been a resident of Webster county. In 1865 he settled on 183 acres of raw land on Finley Creek, and by industry and good management has succeeded in putting 100 acres of his farm under good cultivation, and has erected a good residence and barns. He also owns another farm of 160 acres, with about sixty under cultivation. His wife died in the spring of 1883, having borne four children: William Thomas, Perry W., Linda B. and Samuel Tilden; and in the fall of 1885 he was married to Miss Elizabeth Denny, who was born and reared in Webster county, and died on the 6th of June, 1888.
