Biographical Sketch of Edmund P. Cardwell, Webster County, Missouri >From "History of Laclede, Camden, Dallas, Webster, Wright, Texas, Pulaski, Phelps and Dent Counties, Missouri" The Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1889. ********************************************************************** Edmund P. Cardwell, a prominent farmer and stockman of Webster county, Mo., was born in Roane county, Tenn., on the 8th of July, 1822, and is a son of John and Faney (Ganes) Cardwell, who were born, reared and married in Virginia. They moved to Tennessee about 1814, and in 1833 located in what is now Pulaski county, but two years later purchased land where the town of Marshfield now is, but sold out the following year, and from that time until his death resided near Dallas. Edmund P. Cardwell received the education and rearing of the average farmer's boy, and in July, 1844, was united in marriage to Miss Eda Bruton, a daughter of David Bruton, both of whom were born in Tennessee. He has owned several different farms in Webster county, and since 1868 has re- sided on his present farm. In 1869 he engaged in the mercantile busi- ness in Bloomington, and continued that occupation with good success for about seventeen years. April 13, 1879, his wife died, having borne two children: America F., who is now deceased, and Thomas G., whose sketch appears below. In September, 1879, he married his second wife, Anice Elizabeth Bruton, a daughter of Enoch Bruton. She was born in Wright county, Mo., and is the mother of two children: Caledonia W. and Jessie May. The father is a member of the Missionary Baptist Church. Thomas G. Cardwell was born in Greene county, Mo., March 16, 1848, and remained with and assisted his father on the farm until he attained his majority. In 1868 he was married to Miss Martha Phillips, who was born and reared in Webster county, and by her is the father of eight child- ren: Albert L., Robert E., Jesse N., William E., Thomas A., Mattie R., Eugenia B. and Susan D. They have a good farm of 125 acres, on which they have resided since 1873, and have 100 acres of land under cultiva- tion, with a neat residence and good barns.
