Biographical Sketch of William G. Davis, Webster County, Missouri >From "History of Laclede, Camden, Dallas, Webster, Wright, Texas, Pulaski, Phelps and Dent Counties, Missouri" The Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1889. ********************************************************************** William G. Davis, of Webster county, Mo., is a son of Charles and Ruth (Gearhart) Davis, who were born, reared and married in Tennessee, and about 1841 located in Missouri, settling near where their son, William G., now resides. The father died in September, 1878, having served several terms as justice and assessor of his township. William G. was born in Jackson county, Tenn., August 24, 1832, and until attaining his majority made his home with his parents. In 1861 he enlisted in the Home Guards for three months, and at the expiration of that time enlis- ted in Company E, Forty-ninth Illinois Volunteer Infantry, United States Army, and served until he received his discharge at the close of the war. He was at Fort Donelson, Pittsburgh Landing, Little Rock, and participated in several fights and skirmishes of less note. He was wounded in the arm by a gunshot at Pleasant Hill, La., and was in the hospital for about two months, and after receiving his discharge, Jan- uary 9, 1865, he returned to Webster county and engaged in tilling the soil, and by industry and good management has become the owner of 210 acres of land, eighty-five of which are under cultivation, furnished with good buildings and an orchard of 100 select trees. November 5, 1868, he was wedded to Miss Nancy Caroline Powell, who was born in Giles county, Tenn., and is a daughter of Elias Powell, now deceased, and by her became the father of the following children: Charles B., Amanda J. and James Edmond.
