Biographical Sketch of Dr. Thomas S. Florance, Webster County, Missouri

Dr. Thomas S. Florance, a successful practitioner of Marshfield and
vicinity, was born in Dallas township, Webster county, Mo., November 8,
1853, being the son of James and Sarah S. (Bouldin) Florance.  The 
father was born in Caswell county, N. C., November 4, 1818 and the
mother was born in the same county June 11, 1817.  They now reside in
Webster county, in Dallas township.  As early as 1841 the father came 
to Webster county, Mo., remaining one year, and then returned to North
Carolina, but in 1844 he came back to Webster county, and settled in
Dallas township on the farm where he now lives.  Tolliver Florance, the
grandfather of Dr. Florance, was a native of North Carolina, born in 
1787, and died in his native state in 1872.  The subject of this sketch
is the fourth of six children born to his parents.  He was reared on 
the farm in Dallas Township, and secured a fair education in the common
schools.  In 1874 he came to Marshfield, began the study of medicine in
the office of Dr. C. S. Wallis, and subsequently attended the Missouri
Medical College at St. Louis, from which he graduated in 1877.  He then
began the practice of his profession in Dallas township, Webster county
and there continued a successful practice until November, 1888, when he
removed to Marshfield, and is practicing there at the present.  He was
married, in 1875, to Miss Mary E. Johnson, a native of North Carolina,
born October 13, 1863 and the fruits of this union are four children:
Inez, born June 23, 1876; Ollie G., born August 23, 1878; Robert, born
February 18, 1881; and Walter J., born January 15, 1886.  Politically a
Democrat, his first presidential vote was cast for Grover Cleveland in
1888.  He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, Mt. Olive Lodge, No.
439, and he and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church,
South.
