Biographical Sketch of Gus Gumpertz, Webster County, Missouri

Gus Gumpertz, a leading merchant and business man of Marshfield, is a
native of Cologne, Germany, born July 16, 1842, being the son of Simon
and Sibiela Gumpertz, natives of Germany.  The father was born in Deutz
in 1794, and died in New York City in 1860, and the mother was born in
Sigburg, on the Rhine, in 1803, and is now residing in St. Louis, Mo.
Their son, Gus Gumpertz, was the fifth of a family of eight children by
his father's second marriage.  He obtained a good common education in
the schools of his native country, and in 1855 immigrated with his 
parents to the United States.  They settled in New York City, and here
Mr. Gumpertz learned the cigar maker's trade, which he conducted on his
own account in 1857.  They remained in New York until 1860, and in 1861
Gus Gumpertz enlisted in Company E, Eighth New York Volunteers, and 
served for about one year.  In 1862 he went to California, and for two
years was engaged as a clerk in a dry goods store.  In 1865 he returned
to the East, and went to Carrolton, Ill., where he engaged in general
merchandising, which he continued for nine years.  In 1871 he came to
Marshfield, where he has since been occupied in the same occupation, 
and has met with well deserved success, having done an average business
per annum of not less than $60,000.  By the cyclone of 1880 he lost
$10,000.  He is a practical business man and up with the times.  He was
married in 1870 to Miss Hattie Cole, of St. Louis, formerly of White
Hall, Ill., and who was born in 1850.  They have one son, Simon, born
in 1875.  Mr. Gumpertz is a conservative Democrat.  His brother, David,
who died in New York City in 1887, was a soldier in the late war, serv-
ing four years.
