Biographical Sketch of Joiner Gentry, Webster County, Missouri >From "History of Laclede, Camden, Dallas, Webster, Wright, Texas, Pulaski, Phelps and Dent Counties, Missouri" The Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1889. ********************************************************************** Joiner Gentry may be ranked among the prosperous farmers and stock men of Webster county, Mo., and was born in Jackson county, Ala., October 13, 1832, and is the son of Bartlett and Priscilla (Monday) Gentry, the father's birth occurring February 15, 1803, in North Carolina. About 1831 he went to Alabama, thence ten years later to Missouri, locating where the town of Seymour now is. He made this place his home until 1861, when he went to Texas county, Mo., where he is still residing at the age of eighty-six years. Joiner Gentry was reared in Webster county, and during the late war served in the Home Guards and in the quartermaster's department, and returned home after the cessation of hostilities and engaged in farming, which occupation he has continued in Webster county up to the present time, with the exception of three years spent in Douglas county. His farm of 204 acres was in a very wild state at the time of his purchase, but he has made valuable impro- vements, and now has about 150 acres under cultivation, sixty acres in grass, and has a commodious frame residence and out buildings. He became a member of the Masonic order in 1860, and is now a Master Mason. December 27, 1860, he was married to Miss Martha Smith, who was born in Indiana, but was reared in Missouri, and by her is the father of the following family: Willie Sherman, Amos B., Charles O., Mary J., Robert C. and Martha Ann. Mr. and Mrs. Gentry are members of the Christian Church. She is a daughter of Amos and June Smith, who were born in Kentucky in 1798 and 1804, respectively, and are in all proba- bility the oldest residents of Webster county. They were married in 1824, and have one son sixty-four years of age. ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
