Biographical Sketch of James & John D. Green, Webster County, Missouri >From "History of Laclede, Camden, Dallas, Webster, Wright, Texas, Pulaski, Phelps and Dent Counties, Missouri" The Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1889. ********************************************************************** John D. and James Green, farmers and assessors of Webster county, Mo., were born in Marion county, Tenn., December 7, 1845, and September 13, 1847, respectively. Their parents, Samuel and Elizabeth (Wilburn) Green, were also Tennesseeans, and for a number of years after their marriage resided in their native state, coming to Missouri about 1851, and settling on a farm in the southwest portion of Webster county, where they reared their family of four sons and six daughters: William, who resides in Arkansas; Dr. S. P., a physician of Boone county, Ark.; John D., James; Sarah, wife of T. Barnhart; Malinda, wife of Elijah Morrison; Velveyrettie, Delasia, Martha J. and Ortelia. John and James Green grew to maturity in Webster county, and in their boyhood days received but limited educations in the common schools. After reaching maturer years, they saw the need of good educations, and began attend- ing higher institutions of learning, and acquired a thorough knowledge of the common and higher English branches. They were then engaged in teaching school in Webster county and elsewhere for some time, and in 1875 went to Montana territory, where they remained until the fall of 1877, and then returned home and embarked in merchandising at Rogers- ville, but about a year later their store building and contents were consumed by fire, and they abandoned the mercantile business and they engaged in farming. They own 160 acres of valuable land in one tract, and have about fifty acres cleared and under cultivation, besides own- ing fourteen acres adjoining Rogersville, where they reside with their sisters. They have a pleasant and comfortable residence, and their property shows the result of industry, taste and prosperity. The Green brothers are Republican in politics, and are stanch supporters of the principles of that party. ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
