Biographical Sketch of Valentine Garner, Webster County, Missouri >From "History of Laclede, Camden, Dallas, Webster, Wright, Texas, Pulaski, Phelps and Dent Counties, Missouri" The Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1889. ********************************************************************** Valentine Garner. Prominent among the worthy tillers of the soil and stock men of Webster county, Mo., who deserve honorable mention, is Mr. Garner, who was born in Randolph County, N. C., December 10, 1813. His parents, John and Susan (Halla) Garner, were born in the same state and in 1816 settled in Tennessee, and after residing in Wilson county, of that state, for a number of years, moved to Illinois, where both parents and three grown children died of Cholera in the fall of 1834. Valentine Garner accompanied his parents to Illinois in 1831, and is next to the youngest of their ten children, he and his brother William being the only surviving members of the family. He came to Missouri in 1834, and December 31, of the same year, was married to Sarah Edington, who was born and reared in Tennessee. Her father, James Edington, was one of the early pioneers of the county. Mr. and Mrs. Garner spent the winter of their marriage in Illinois, and the following May returned to Webster county, Mo., where they have since resided. He purchased raw land (346 acres), on which he erected a house in 1840, and now has 200 acres of his farm cleared and well improved. His marriage has been blessed in the birth of the following children: Nancy, wife of George Linn, of California; John, also residing in California; William, who resides in Webster county; Martha, wife of Benjamin Shields, of Webster county; Dialtha, wife of P. D. Grigsby, of California; Frances, wife of John Shook, of Webster county; Mary, wife of W. P. Letchworth; Anna, wife of Jones Mackey; James and George, both of whom are married and reside in Webster county, and Julia, who is the wife of Robert Chaffin. The following children are deceased: Jane, Susan, Amanda and Sarah.
