Biographical Sketch of Newton F. Grier, Webster County, Missouri >From "History of Laclede, Camden, Dallas, Webster, Wright, Texas, Pulaski, Phelps and Dent Counties, Missouri" The Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1889. ********************************************************************** Newton F. Grier, farmer, stock raiser, and native of Webster County, Mo., was born on the 18th of July, 1840. His father, Samuel Grier, was born in North Carolina, and was there married to Elizabeth Pleasant who was also born in Caswell county, N. C. They moved to Missouri as early as 1834, and purchased land in what is now Webster county, where they reared their family and resided until their respective deaths, the father's demise occurring in August, 1871. Of ten children born to them nine lived to maturity and became heads of families, and four brothers and four sisters are living at the present writing. Newton F. Grier's boyhood days were spent in attending the common schools and assisting his father on the farm, and in 1861 he enlisted in the Con- federate army, in Col. Snavel's regiment, but was wounded by a gunshot in the thigh at the battle of Pea Ridge, being permanently disabled, and was obliged to return home. He was married in Webster county, in March, 1867, to Sarah E. Smith, whose father, William Smith, was an early emigrant from Tennessee to Missouri, and about two years after his marriage located on his present farm of 260 acres. He has 150 acres of land in a good state of cultivation, and has a commodious and comfortable residence. His wife died in December, 1879, having borne a family of three sons and one daughter: Tasso, Samuel, Dorsey and Ollie. In September, 1880, Mr. Grier married Mary E., the daughter of John Morton, and by her has two children, Everett and Roxie.
