Biographical Sketch of Edwin W. Salmon, Webster County, Missouri >From "History of Laclede, Camden, Dallas, Webster, Wright, Texas, Pulaski, Phelps and Dent Counties, Missouri" The Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1889. ********************************************************************** Edwin W. Salmon. It is the truth to say that "man is the architect of his own fortune." Circumstances may make or mar his prospects to a certain extent, but a determined will...will bend even the force of circumstances to its bidding. So-called genius has little to do with the success of men in general, but the possession of keen perception, sound judgement and determination, essential elements in any success- ful calling, is sure to accomplish the aims hoped for. Among the representative and truly substantial and worthy citizens of Marshfield, no one occupies a more prominent position than Edwin W. Salmon, whose association with its financial interests, and familiarity and connect- ion with the commercial affairs of the community, have added materially to his popularity and recognition as a business man. Born at Versailles, Morgan Co., Mo., March 14, 1856, he is the son of William W. and Ann G. (Tutt) Salmon, a family well and favorably known in the vicinity of Clinton, Mo., where the father now resides. The former was born in Greenville county, S. C., in 1833, his wife's birth occuring in Rappa- hannock county, Va., in 1835. Edwin's paternal grandfather, Ezekiel Salmon, a native of South Carolina, became an early resident of Miss- ouri (1839), and died in Morgan county in 1851. William Salmon upon starting in life for himself first engaged in merchandising, and sub- sequently turned his attention to farming and stock raising, his business, which he started at Versailles in 1852, being interrupted and broken up by the war. In 1863 he removed to St. Louis, resuming his mercantile interests there until 1870, in the latter part of which year he located in Henry county, of which Clinton, his present residence, is the county seat. Edwin W. Salmon, the eldest of a family of eleven children (eight of whom survive), received an excellent common school education, improving the opportunities with which he was favored, and in February, 1873, he entered the bank of Salmon & Salmon, at Clinton, there obtaining an admirable business training, which well qualified him to establish the Bank of Marshfield, in June, 1885. The success of this now well-known financial institution has been steady and solid, and it has proved an important factor in the material advancement and reputation of Marshfield. Mr. Salmon, as its head, has manifested an ability and force of character which at once mark him a man above the ordinary. His strict integrity, earnest and sound financial judgement and his uprightness and honor in all matters of business and private life, have gained for him the confidence of all, and he is worthy of esteem and respect shown him and his family. Public spirited, enter- prising and reliable, he has ever lent his influence to the growth and development of his adopted home, and has liberally supported all just measures tending to its benefit. October 10, 1883, Miss Lucie A. Milburn, of Baltimore, Md., daughter of Alexander Milburn, became his wife. Mrs. Salmon's birth occurred in 1861. One child has blessed their union, Milburn Tutt, born November 9, 1884. Mrs. Salmon is a member of the Episcopal Church. ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
