Biographical Sketch of Samuel Coday, Wright County, Missouri >From "History of Laclede, Camden, Dallas, Webster, Wright, Texas, Pulaski, Phelps and Dent Counties, Missouri" The Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1889. ********************************************************************** Samuel Coday. Prominent among the successful and enterprising farmers and stock raisers of Gasconade Township stands the name of Mr. Coday, who was born in Kentucky in 1818, and who is one of the old and much esteemed citizens of the county. He is the son of John and Betsey (Summers) Coday. John Coday was born in Virginia, and was one of the pioneers of Kentucky. He moved from that State to Indiana, and came to Missouri, about 1835, locating on the farm where his son Samuel is now residing. There he died at an advanced age. Mrs. Betsey (Summers) Coday is also deceased. They were the parents of eight children, five now living. The maternal grandfather was a miller by occupation, and was waylaid and shot. The maternal grandmother died in Wright County at a very great age. Samuel Coday grew to manhood in Wright County, and married Miss Mary J. Binkley, who bore him nine children: Samantha, wife of Samuel Adams, Henry, Lihew, Isaac, Emily E., James, Nancy, Parthina, and Martha, wife of F. Shaver. Mr. Coday can relate many interesting anecdotes relative to pioneer times, and has helped kill many bear. He and a party of two others entered a cave in Ozark Moun- tains, where they shot and wounded a bear. One of their dogs was killed and another was badly used up by the infuriated animal, which proceeded to the mouth of the cave, sat down and kept the hunters there all night. Panthers, deer and other wild animals were plentiful. Mr. Coday has about 300 acres of good land, and is in very comfortable circumstances. One of his sons is living on the farm. Mr. Coday is a member of the Agricultural Wheel. ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
