Biographical Sketch of W. H. Hopper, Wright County, Missouri >From "History of Laclede, Camden, Dallas, Webster, Wright, Texas, Pulaski, Phelps and Dent Counties, Missouri" The Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1889. ********************************************************************** W. H. Hopper, of the Hopper Furniture Co., of Mansfield, Mo., was born in Indiana on the 9th of February, 1827, and since ten years of age, has been a resident of Missouri. He is the second of eleven children born to the marriage of Raleigh Hopper and Rebecca Malonee, and in early life received only the advantages of the subscription schools. He remained at home with his family until July 4, 1852, when he was married to Miss Ella J. Wilson, and began making a home for himself. His wife was born in Indiana in 1829, and became the mother of eight children, six of whom are living: Rachel, wife of W. F. Hulla; Margaret, wife of John Riley; Polly Ann, the deceased wife of Sampson Rippee; Rebecca A., wife of Jacob Gass; Rhoda, wife of Henry Tarbutton; Simpson, Catherine, and John, who died at the age of twenty-two years. Mr. Hopper lived in Douglas County until February 24, 1871, when he came to Wright County, and here has since been engaged in farming. In 1861 he served in the Home Guards, and the following year served in the Enrolled Missouri Militia. Being disbanded in the spring of 1863, in August of the same year he joined the Sixth Provisional Regiment, but was mustered out March 5, 1864, and entered the Forty-sixth Missouri Volunteer Infantry, serving until the close of the war as second lieu- tenant. He now belongs to the G. A. R., and in his political views is a Republican. The family worship in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. His father, Raleigh Hopper, was born in Virginia in 1785, but grew to manhood in Kentucky, and there married his first wife, Polly Neill, who died after having borne a family of seven children. Mr. Hopper then married Miss Malonee, who was born in 1804. They moved to Missouri in 1837, and after residing in Pulaski, Wright and Ozark counties located in Douglas County, where the father died October 17, 1844. At that time he was a member of the Missouri Legislature from Ozark County. The mother still lives, and resides in Douglas County.
