Musick, physician and surgeon at Mountain Grove, Mo., and brother to Thomas H. and William H. H. Musick, was born in Montgomery County, Mo., January 27, 1836. The genealogy of the Musick family is traced back several generations to its origin in George Musick, who was picked up when a child as the only survivor of a shipwreck on the coast of Wales, and was called Musick because of his musical talents. Grow- ing to manhood in that country, he had five sons: Alexis, George, David, Abram and Ephraim, all of whom immigrated to America, and settled in Spottsylvania County, Va., early in the eighteenth century. Thomas R. Musick, son of Ephraim, who married a Roy, was born in Spottsylvania County, Va., in 1757. He united with the Baptist Church, and entered the ministry at seventeen years of age. Soon after he immigrated to North Carolina, where he enlisted in the army, served through the Revolutionary War, was twice a prisoner to the British, and was at the surrender of Cornwallis. After the war he removed to Ken- tucky, where he married Mary Nevel. About 1801 he came to Missouri, and preached the first Protestant sermon west of the Mississippi. He was for many years pastor of Fee Fee Baptist Church, in St. Louis Co., and was buried there in 1843. Capt. Lewis Musick, son of Thomas R., and grandfather to the subject of this sketch, was born in Kentucky about 1783. He married Mary Fitzwater, whose maternal grandfather was a Bean. Hayden, was born in Todd County, Ky., in 1815. Elisha, Jr., was the son of Elisha Hayden, Sr., who married Jane Donaldson, the daughter of Samuel Donaldson. Her mother was a Bailey. Mary W. Hayden was a daughter of Joshua and Susannah Harrison, and was born in South Caro- lina. Joshua was born in Virginia, nd his mother was Mary Eliza. Elisha Hayden, Sr., was born in Virginia, and was the son of William Hayden, who married Mary Ann Waller. Elisha, Sr., was a Revolutionary soldier. The Haydens originally spelled the name Headen, and the family was of Irish extraction. Jane Donaldson's maternal grandmother was a Clayton. Susannah Harrison was a sister to Elisha Hayden, Sr. The Harrisons were related to Gov. Ben Harrison of Virginia, and the Donaldson's a branch of the family of that name distinguished in the history of Tennessee. Dr. Lewis E. Musick is a man of more than aver- age natural endowments, and laid the foundation of a good English education in the common schools. He took sides with the Union during the Civil War, entered the service in 1861, and served until May 15, 1865, when failing health forced him to abandon his post of duty. He served as sergeant, lieutenant and captain. Dr. Musick was married in 1864 to Miss Margaret H. Lewis, a native of Missouri, born in 1850, and to them was born one child, Ada, wife of E. L. Shinkle, of Pitts- burg, Kansas. Mrs. Musick is the youngest child of the second husband of Rebecca H. Lewis, whose first husband was her full cousin, and was named Walpole. The Walpoles are of English extraction, and related to the family of Sir Robert Walpole. Dr. Lewis E. Musick graduated from and took his degree in the American Medical College, St. Louis, Mo. He came to Mountain Grove in 1881, and here found an extensive business awaiting him. Dr. and Mrs. Musick are well preserved people for their years. He attributes this remarkable preservation of youthful vigor to a strict observance of nature's laws and superior hygienic treat- ment. He is a member of the G. A. R., and is a Republican in politics. ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
