Biographical Sketch of James J. McMullin. Among the prosperous agriculturists of Wright Co., Mo., may be mentioned Mr. McMullin, who was born in Roane County, Tenn., in 1827, and was there reared and educated. He learned to read and write unaided, and the rest of his education was received in the old subscription schools. When about twenty years of age he was marr- ied, and soon afterward went to Iowa, and at the end of four years went to Lee County, Iowa, and from there moved to Scott County, Mo., and in 1857 took up his abode in Wright County, where he has since made his home. He was in the Federal service, in the Sixteenth Missouri Cavalry during the late war, and was out three years, being mustered out of service at Springfield. He owns a good farm of 280 acres, and is con- sidered one of the successful agriculturists and stock men of the county. He is a member of the A. F. & A. M., is a Democrat in politics and he and family are members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He was married to Miss Eliza J. Breazeale, who was born in Roane County, Tenn., July 4, 1830, and thirteen children, nine of whom are living, were born to their union: Samuel, Mary, Maude, Joseph, Frances, Laura, James, Jesse and Pearl. Three children died in infancy, and Martha at the age of fourteen years. Mr. McMullin's parents, James and Rebecca (Mattock) McMullin, were married in Tennessee, whither the father had moved from his native state, North Carolina, when a young man. He had been previously married in Pennsylvania, to a Miss McDonald, who died in Roane County, Tenn., leaving four children. His union with Miss Mattock was blessed by the birth of nine children. After his death, which occurred in Tennessee, his widow married John Turner, and moved to Missouri, and died in Scott County, having borne Mr. Turner one child.
