Biographical Sketch of H. C. C. Miller was born in Wilmington, Del., May 10, 1855, the son of E. F. and T. E. (Richmond) Miller. E. F. Miller was born in Saxony, Germany, in 1814, and was a machinist by occupation. He came to America when about the age of thirty years, and located in Philadelphia but afterward moved to Wilmington, Delaware. After remaining there a short time he moved to Marshall, Texas, and then back to St. Louis, Mo., where he followed manufacturing for some time, but moved from there to St. Paul, Minn., and then to Rolla, Mo., where he first followed mercantile pursuits, and afterward the livery business. He is now living in Rolla. Mrs. T. E. (Richmond) Miller was born in Balti- more, Md., in 1832, and by her marriage to E. F. Miller became the mother of nine children, six now living, of whom our subject was the second in order of birth. He grew to manhood and was educated in St. Louis and Rolla, Mo. He then clerked from the time he was fourteen years of age until he was twenty-nine, when he engaged in business at Mountain Grove, when there were only twenty people in the place. He started with a capital of $300, and carried on merchandising two or three years, when he gradually became interested in the lumber busi- ness. He became a partner in the Lake Lily Mills, and helped remodel it. He is now a partner with his brother in the store here, and owns 3,000 acres of land in Cleveland County, Ark. He owns a saw mill plant on his land, which annually cuts 7,000,000 feet, and they ship 800 car loads of lumber and timber per year. His whole investment there is about $25,000. In 1881 Mr. Miller was married, his wife's birth occuring in Illinois in September, 1861. This union resulted in the birth of two children, Mabel and Minnie. Mr. Miller is a member of the A. F. & A. M., and is Past Master; is a Republican in politics, and he virtually built the Methodist Epsicopal Church building. He is one of the essentially progressive men of South Central Missouri, and has done more than any other one man to build up Mountain Grove. He is a young man of push and energy, and is truly a self-made man. E. J.
