Biographical Sketch of John T. Pope, attorney at law and prosecuting attorney elect of Wright County, Mo., was born in Davidson County, N. C., January 24, 1849, son of Thomas and Mary A. (Hale) Pope. The father was also born in North Carolina, in November, 1819, and was a tiller of the soil. To his marriage were born seven children, four now living. Mr. Pope is still living, and is a resident of North Carolina. His wife, Mrs. Mary A. (Hale) Pope, died in 1862, at the age of thirty-seven years. The Pope family are of Pennsylvania Dutch descent, and the grandfather, Isaac Pope, was born in Maryland, and immigrated to North Carolina at an early date. He was one of the early settlers of that State, and was a farmer by occupation. The maternal grandfather, John Hale, was of Scotch descent. Edward Hale, uncle of subject, published the Fayette- ville Observer, at Fayetteville, N. C., and his son is Hale, the publisher at New York City. John T. Pope left North Carolina at the age of nineteen years, and came direct to Wright County, Mo., where he located and received a good common school education in Davidson and Bethany Academy, North Carolina. He taught school, read law at the same time, and when his term of school was over, he commenced the prac- tice of law. He served as superintendent of public schools from 1870 to 1872, and then county attorney for four years. He was elected prosecuting attorney of the county, and re-elected in 1878. He has dealt extensively in real estate in Wright County, and now owns more than 1,000 acres with good titles. He was married, in Wright county, to Miss Mattie A. Bryant, a native of Phelps County, Mo., who bore him six children: Charles E., Guy C., Otto D., Thomas A., Alith, and Ruth, who died at the age of four months.
