Biographical Sketch of Edward H. Stewart, Wright County, Missouri >From "History of Laclede, Camden, Dallas, Webster, Wright, Texas, Pulaski, Phelps and Dent Counties, Missouri" The Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1889. ********************************************************************** Edward H. Stewart, attorney at law and member of the real estate firm of Pope & Stewart, of Hartville, Mo., was born in Buffalo, Dallas Co., Mo., in 1865, and was reared and educated in that state. He received more than average educational advantages from his earliest childhood, and being of a literary turn of mind, coupled with a studious temper- ment during his college course at Marionville Collegiate Institute, graduated with honors from that institution in 1884, having laid the foundation of a good English education. After leaving school he went to Texas County, Mo., where he engaged in the profession of teaching. He afterward became editor of the Record, a journal published at Cabool. Hard study at college caused Mr. Stewart's eyes to become affected, and he went to Wichita, Kansas, where he joined a corps of civil engineers then in the employ of the Missouri Pacific Railroad Co., and helped located 4,000 miles of railroad, in Kansas and Colo- rado. He afterward left the employ of the company, and engaged at a better salary with the Denver & Rio Grande Railway Company. He worked through Colorado, New Mexico and Utah territories. Having regained his health, Mr. Stewart returned to Missouri in October, 1887. Having previous studied law, he was admitted to the bar at Hartville, Mo., in September, 1888. Since that time he and attorney S. E. Pope have organized the real estate firm of Pope & Stewart. They are doing an extensive land, insurance and loan business. Mr. Stewart is a genuine Democrat by conviction, his ancestors having been Republicans. During the campaign of 1888 he stumped Wright County in favor of Grover Cleveland's administration. His efforts on the stump signalized his ability, and have been the cause of his being offered various honor- able and remunerative positions outside of Wright County. Mr. Stewart is the son of A. J. and Anna (Gay) Stewart, and the grandson on his mother's side of William Gay, who was a native of Kentucky, and who was a colonel in the Creek and Seminole War. He became a pioneer of California, and lived near Oroville, where he amassed considerable property, and where he spent his declining years. He died in 1875. The maternal great-grandfather was a native of England, and the maternal great-great-grandfather was a native of Germany. Mrs. Anna (Gay) Stewart was born in Indian Territory in 1835, and is now living in a comfortable home in Barry County, Mo. ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
