Judge E. C. Wilkinson, his brother, B. R. Wilkinson, of Natchez, Miss., and J. Murdough, of Holly Springs, Miss., called at the tailor's shop of Varnum? & Redding, where the Judge had ordered a coat. The garment being tried on, Judge W. thought it did not fit him, and became irritated. Mr. Redding undertook to convince him he was in error, whereupon the Judge seized an iron poker and attacked Redding. A journeyman tailor, named A. H. Meeks, interfered, and one of the Judge's companions drew a bowie knife; but through the interposition of a gentleman passing at the moment, the affray was terminated without injury to any of the parties. Shortly afterwards, Redding and Meeks together with John Bothwell and Wm. Holmes, went to the G__t House, the lodging of the Judge and his friends, where a further altercation ensued, and bowie knives were again flourished by all the Mississippians. - Meeks was stabbed in the abdomen by Murdough, and instantly killed. - Bothwell mortally wounded in the back by Judge Wilkinson, and died the next day. - Holmes was severely wounded, it was supposed by B. R. Wilkinson - and Henry Oldham slightly wounded, probably by accident, as he did not mingle in the affray. - The three murderous assailants were committed to prison for examination. This is the account given by the Public Advertiser, which says, however, that there are some conflicting statements given by others.
