You are further advised that any correspondence on your part relative to said records of the War Department, should be addressed to The Adjutant General, War Department, Washington, D. C. and not to this Bureau. Very respectfully, Acting Commissioner.” Undated: Note on torn scrap of paper in file: “sir I have mooved to Arkansas my Posoffis is Bay Ark [Signed] M. J. Isbell [NOTE: CSA Enlistment Cards indicate George “Wash”, “Shoog” [Marion J.] and their younger brother William Isbell all enlisted about the same time at Moulton, Lawrence co, AL in the early days of the Civil War; all three were listed as deserted after a few short weeks. Only Marion Jasper applied for a pension. There was a Capt. William “Bill” Looney [not Lomax, Luna, or Luney] of Winston co, AL who formed a volunteer regiment of the lst Alabama Cavalry, USA, made up primarily of men from Winston co, AL. This regiment served in and around northern Mississippi (Corinth area) and in Tennessee (Shiloh) but records were lost. Chances are he wouldn’t have gotten a pension anyway, as he wouldn’t have been able to prove his CSA service was “other than voluntary”. Winston county, Alabama was a hilly, forested area of ‘poor dirt farmers’. It officially seceded from the CSA during the war, and became The Free State of Winston – mlj].
