He was on one knee, sawing a piece of timber, when the fastenings gave way and fell a distance of about thirty feet, causing injuries from which he died Tuesday, Feb. 28. Another gentleman on the scaffold only saved himself by catching to a tressel. Mr. Owens recently moved here with his family, a wife and two daughters, from Ripley, Tippah county, where he was well known, having at one time been a marshal of the town of Ripley. The burial took place yesterday at the city cemetery. The Herald extends sincere sympathy to the bereaved ones. Funeral sevices were conducted at 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon by Rev’s Brooks and Wesson.
