Alfred followed his army unit throughout the South from New Orleans to the Siege of Port Hudson. He loved the serene, lush hills and valleys of the South and after mustering out of the army in 1865, settled in Wilkinson County, Mississippi. Alfred, who was a seaman in Canada, became a farmer with a new wife, Annie Jane North, and ultimately two sons: Charles Newman and Samuel North. The descendants of Alfred Perkins two sons became families who settled mainly in Mississippi and Louisiana. Charles Newman Perkins and Lula Annie Belle Barker married and settled in Gloster while Samuel North Perkins married Bertha Louise Floyd and settled in Natchez. The descendants of those families hold a reunion every October at Percy Quin to celebrate each other and their lineage. This year, the reunion held special significance as the unmarked resting place of Alfred Perkins has been found and validated. The United States Department of Veteran Affairs has authorized and produced a headstone marker for the Civil War Veteran, Corporal Alfred Perkins 1844 - 1915. The stone, which is pictured below, will be laid by Perkins Descendants in the month to come. Perkins Descendants would like to thank Perkins Feed and Seed, Gloster, MS for their greatly appreciated contributions to this project. We are also indebted to a wonderful man and his family who have voluntarily taken care of this cemetery for more than a decade. They even made the sign pictured below using an old, worn-out one as a guide. It is noted here that the church was torn down to accommodate Camp Van Dorn. October 30, 2011, Samuel Nathaniel Perkins, Annie Belle Perkins Anderson and Clydell Morgan, second and third generation grandchildren, laid the headstone of Alfred Perkins in Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery, Centreville, Amite County, MS.
