                                        McCool, Atalla, Mississippi 

                                              July The 17, 1886 

  

My Dear Aunt, 

  

     Is writing to you I thought that I would drop you a few lines this leaves 
us all well and I hope that it may find you the same.  It appears to me great 
pleasure to have the opportunity to write to you.  We’re having some fine 
weather our crops is looking as well as could be expected.  We have had a great 
deal of rain they are through work I am very glad for the weather is very 
warm.  Well, Auntie we are looking for company. 

  

     Pa had a letter from Cousin Ben this week he said that he had about 3 more 
weeks work to do then he was coming to see us.  We will appreciate his visit 
highly that is something that we never had  had a cousin to visit us.  That is 
something that we never ??????  all ????? Dear cousin .   Pa is writing to him 
this morning.  I hope that his stay with us will be one of great pleasure we 
was much surprised when we heard that he was in the state.  We have had very 
good health this year so far.  Had a great deal of sickness last year.  I had a 
sick spell myself.  One of my sisters died the youngest one her name was Sue.  
She was nearly 18 years old was the fit of the family but the good lord seen to 
take her home.  She called us all to her and told us all good by and told us to 
meet her in heaven said she was not afraid to die said she was going to 
heaven.  It is my full determination to meet her in heaven.  Pray for me that I 
may meet her it seems that the death angle visit our poor home to often.  I 
have 3 sisters and one brother my Brothers name is Tomma??  My other sister 
name is Eliza she is married has 4 children the next one is Annie? The next is 
Martha?  My sister that died was Sue.  Ma is looking very well now her health 
is very good.  Ma would way 150 ??? pounds her hair is turning gray 
right ????????   Pa has splendid health. 


      Well I will close for this time hoping to hear from you soon you must 
write .  Give my love and best wishes to all of your children and to the 
family ????????? if their be any.  We may ???????? after me so I close now Love 
to you Good by.

Additional Comments:
I believe this was written by Martha Elizabeth "Mattie" Bridges, a daughter of 
Ezekiel J. Bridges & Elizabeth Talley Smith.  Ezekiel J. Bridges was a brother 
of Thomas W. Bridges.  The letter is very hard to read in places but the names 
seem to fit this family.
