He was the fifth child of the late John Robert Gardner and Annie Lee Pace- Gardner. A brother and sister preceded him in death also. Carnell, as he was called by family and friends, departed this life on Monday, July 28, 1997 at 9:30 p.m. at the Veteran's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. He accepted Christ as his savior at an early age and joined the Wanderer's Home Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorage of the late Reverend T. F. Hammond. Carnell rededicated his life to Jesus Christ two years ago. Carnell received his education in the public schools of Mound bayou, MS, graduating from John F. Kennedy High School in 1967. In January of 1968, he enlisted in the Armed Service where he served six years, two (2) years active duty and four (4) years Army Reserve. His tour as a solider included Vietnam. He was awarded several medals of honor while he served his country: National Defense Service Medal, Bietnam Service Medal w\2 bronze stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal w\Device 1960, 2 O\S Bars, Sharp Shooter (M14), 1st Class Gunner (M60), Marksman (M16), Combat Infantryman's Badge (lawd). to cherish his memories, he leaves two daughters, Rose M. Gardner, Kwanza V. Gardner; One Son, James Carnell Gardner, Jr. all of Shelby, MS; three sisters, Alla and Gerald Faye Gardner of Chicago, Il and Jacqulyne Faye Gardner of Mound Bayou, MS; one brother, John Hilton Gardner of Mound Bayou, MS; two aunts, Alla Fair Turner of Mound Bayou, MS and Tracy Gardner of Decator, IL; one uncle, Luther Gardner of Decator, IL; a devoted friend Cynthia Washington, three grandchildren, two nieces, two nephews and a host of cousins other relatives and friends. -A TRUE SOLIDER WHO FOUGHT A GOOD FIGHT- "Thou therefore endure hardness, as a Good Solider of Jesus Christ. No manthat warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; That he may please him who has chosen him to be a solider".
