PHILLIPS was discovered in the swamps by the bloodhounds, and while attempting to escape from a possee was shot in the leg. An officer took the negro in charge and started for Cleveland to place him in jail. About a mile from town a mob met the officer, took the negro from him, brought him to the spot where REED was killed and hanged him to a telephone pole. So quietly was the negro hanged that the majority of the inhabitants of Cleveland did not know when the lynching occurred.
