Claiborne County, Mississippi Cooper Cemetery Submitted by: Wanda Horton Address: whorton674@aol.com Located several hundred yards east of the road connecting Hwy. 548 and Barland Road on the eastern edge of Claiborne County. Access is by a private logging road. Visited in the early 1980's, and in Feb. Of 2001 Notes from the 2001 visit: Since prior visit area has been heavily logged, and cemetery is difficult to find because it is hidden in high grasses. On this occasion we located it by it being near a deerstand. It is actually just inside the Claiborne County line, I believe on the property that was part of James Cooper's estate in 1854. It is in Township 10, section 32, range 5 East. Double headstone: James Cooper, Died 8/20/1854, Aged about 42 years Pothana Sanders, Married to James Cooper, After his death Wm Bunting Died 12/16/1900 Inscription: Gone to a bright home where grief cannot come Note: On the 2001 visit, we found foot markers with the initials J.C., and P.S.C.B. At these graves, but had not noted them before. Single headstone: Dorenda Cooper, Wife of T.S. Hudson, Afterward wife of J.A. Henderson Born 6/5/1851, Died 11/26/1897 Inscription: Sleep Mother Dear And take thy rest God called thee Home He thought it Best There are several boulders placed in the area which possibly mark other graves. On the 1980's visit, we estimated at least 8 other graves.
